This vacancy is for a Administrative Support Assistant (OA) position in the Administrative Office for the Demographic Programs Directorate, and will primarily service the Social, Economic and Housing Statistics Division located at the U.S. Census Bureau Headquarters in Suitland, Maryland. 
One year probationary period may be required.

Relocation expenses may be paid.

This is a bargaining unit position.

This position may be filled through means other than the competitive process.

The individual selected for this position will:
 

  • Prepare various administrative requests/documents (e.g., budget position listing, invoice cost allocation worksheets, travel vouchers/reconciliations, leave audits, requests for training, etc.).
  • Review administrative requests/documents (e.g., personnel, procurement, time and attendance, training, etc.) for completeness, accuracy, and adherence to established guidelines, policies, regulations, and procedures.
  • Provide guidance and advice to managers and employees regarding a variety of administrative policies and regulations (e.g., human resources, leave, procurement, property control, training, etc.).

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    To be minimally qualified for this position, applicants MUST have a typing proficiency of at least 40 words per minute with 3 or fewer errors based on a five-minute sample.

    In addition, you must have the experience or education or a combination of both, all listed below.

    You have at least one year of specialized experience as an Administrative Support Assistant at the grade 4 level in the Federal service or at least one year of equivalent work experience providing information, preparing documents and reviewing, auditing, tracking, and identifying errors in two or more administrative functions such as: processing personnel actions, payroll, benefits, travel, or billing/procurement. You act independently when performing routine assignments of limited scope and receive detailed instructions for all other assignments. Your work is reviewed for accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with instruction.

    You have successfully completed 4 years above the high school level in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or at least 20 hours or classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial or technical school.

    OR


    You have equivalent combinations of successfully completed post high school education and experience. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.

    HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

    We will review your resume, optional cover letter and supporting documentation (transcripts if applicable) to determine if you meet the minimum qualifications for the position.  If you meet the minimum qualifications stated in the vacancy announcement, we will compare your resume, optional cover letter and supporting documentation to your responses on the scored occupational questionnaire that you completed as part of the application and place you in one of three pre-defined categories.  These categories are "gold," "silver," and "bronze."  However, your resume and/or optional cover letter must support your responses to the occupational questions, or your score will be lowered.  Candidates placed in the “gold” category will be identified for referral to the hiring manager and may be invited for an interview. How you will be evaluated for preference eligibility: Within each category, those entitled to veterans' preference will be listed at the top of the pre-defined category for which they are placed.  Preference eligibles with a service-connected disability of 10% or more will be listed at the top of the highest quality category (gold) for all positions except for Professional and Scientific positions at the grade 9/ band II and above.
