The Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center is recruiting for a Medical Support Assistant. The Medical Support Assistant will function in the Health Administrative Service. The Medical Support Assistant duties include:

 

·         Checking patients into the emergency room, admitting patients to the wards, and providing assistance in Fast Track/Annex.

 

·         Assisting the physicians and nursing staff in the emergency room with contacting Radiology, labs, etc.

·         Monitoring the patient data card process for the unit and communicating delays with the software to the appropriate staff and patients. 

·         Insuring all new enrollees are registered within 7 days of receipt of their application and contacting the Patient Service Assistant or other staff members for verification. 

·         Responding to complex questions involving a range of issues. 

·         Scheduling appointments and providing information regarding enrollment eligibility; unit, clinic and hospital policies, procedures and locations to patients, family members and staff. 

·         Verifying eligibility/entitlement for benefits of all applicants using various methods including assessment, military discharge documents, HINQ, VIS, and other means, such as communicating with VA Regional Office or HEC or VA Records Processing Center. 

·         Receiving patients and visitors in person or telephonically. 

·         Providing coverage in Admissions, Enrolment, Emergency Room, Descendent Affairs, and Anticoagula clinic, when necessary.

 

Work Schedule: 24 hours with Rotating days and hours.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:   

a.    Citizenship.  Citizen of the United States.  (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g.)

b.    Experience and Education

1)   Experience.  Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position.

OR

2)   Education.  One year above high school.

OR

3)   Experience/Education Combination.  Equivalent combination of experience and education. An example would be one year of clerical or office experience and six months of education above high school. (Transcripts are required if using education to qualify for the position.)

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:

 

1). GS-3 Experience or Education.  None beyond the basic requirements.

 

2). GS 4 Experience.  One year of experience in clerical or office work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position or two years of education above high school. 

 

OR

 

GS- 4 Education.  Two years of education above high school.

 

3). GS-5 Experience.  One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.

 

OR

 

GS-5 Education.  Four years of education above high school.

Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items such as papers, books, small parts. No special physical demands are required to perform the work. Hearing aids permitted.
