 JOB DESCRIPTION:    

 Tour of Duty: Monday through Friday; 8:00 to 4:30; with possibility of extended hours and weekends.

The selected candidate will serve as the Chief, Department of Medical Specialties at the Greenville VA Health Care Center with a dual appointment on the staff of the East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine. This Department at the Greenville VA Health Care Center will consist of eight medicine specialty sections. The selected physician will have responsibility as Department Chief as well as provide clinical care to adult patients in their specialty. The selected physician reports to the Health Care Center Associate Chief of Staff and serves as a key clinical resource for the Health Care Center Administrator, Durham VA Medical Center Director, Chief of Staff, and Chief of Medical Services. The physician will provide clinical direction to all medicine subspecialty areas to optimize patient health and work seamlessly with multidisciplinary team members. The physician and his/her teams will support Veteran health care goals and patient satisfaction. The selectee will provide team guidance in patient care in accordance wiht professional standards, core values and commitment to service. The incumbent will be responsible for insuring clinic operations including clinical work, oversight and administration of all aspects of the department, including research program and guidance and training for medical residents and other trainees. The physician selectee will support hiring, orientation, retention and evaluation of physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. Selectee must be Board Certified in one of the following medicine specialties: Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology, Dermatology, Cardiology, Neurology, Pulmonology, Endocrinology, or Nephrology. The selected physician will collaborate closely with the East Carolina University Department of Internal Medicine and must meet the requirements for a faculty appointment at the Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • U.S. citizenship
  • English language proficiency(for direct patient care)
  • Physical standards - All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to employment may be required.
  • Licensure and Registration – Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States or in the District of Columbia. The Physician must maintain a current registration to continue employment with the VA
  • Educational requirements - Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
    • Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.
    • Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
    • Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e. Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.
    • For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required.
  • First-Year Residency (Internship) - Completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was competed. For a VA resident, the appropriate Deans Committee and Resident Review Board may recommend appointment on the basis of the candidate's acceptability for residency training. Approved residencies are:
    • Those approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals, American Medical Association, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, OR
    • Other residencies or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. The Board may determine that the residency requirement has been met if the candidate has completed 1 year of postgraduate education.
    • Must be Board Certified in one of the following medicine specialties: Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology, Dermatology, Cardiology, Neurology, Pulmonology, Endocrinology, Nephrology or Hepatology
    • Proficiency in the use of various computer programs for patient care is required.

SALARY TO BE DETERMINED BY PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS BOARD OF YOUR PEERS AND BASED ON YOUR EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE. Pay range maximum varies by specialty: GI, Cardiology, Dermatology to $285K, Hematology/Oncology, Pulmonary and Nephrology to $240K, Neurology and Endocrinology to $235K

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

·         U.S. Citizenship by Birth or Naturalization

·         Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed (VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G2).
