As an entry level position, most duties are performed in assistance to a higher level Peer Specialist and/or under close supervision of a licensed independent provider in mental health to facilitate learning and the development of skills. The knowledge required for this position will be attained through ongoing instruction provided by the supervisor or designated position to complete and pass the Department of Veterans Affairs Peer Specialist competency assessment.  In addition, the employee will attend Peer Specialist certification training and must pass the VA Peer Specialist certification test, to continue employment as a Certified Peer Specialist.

The Apprentice serves as a recovery agent by providing and advocating for any effective recovery based services that will aid the veteran in daily living.  The Apprentice orients veterans new to the programs in which they work about the services, hours, locations, staff and other pertinent information necessary for the veteran to understand the program and how to utilize it.

WORK SCHEDULE:  Alternate work schedule available.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must be able to perform primarily light and sedentary duties with occasionally moderate physical demands, exercise patience, and control emotions.

Basic Requirements

U.S. Citizenship.

Be a veteran who has recovered or is recovering from a mental health condition.

Length of Experience as a Consumer of Mental Health Recovery Services. Veterans eligible must have spent a minimum of one year in personal recovery from a mental health condition.

The entry-level Peer Support Apprentice position itself does not provide any known promotion potential, but does allow VHA to hire uncertified, but otherwise qualified Veterans whom VHA will arrange to receive training for becoming certified and thus fully qualified for future Peer Specialist opportunities.

 


There is no substitution of education for the Peer Support Apprentice position at the GS-5 grade level.

 

 

Peer Support Apprentices must actively pursue becoming certified as required to serve as a Peer Specialist.  At the time of appointment, the supervisor will provide the Peer Support Apprentice with the written requirements for becoming certified, the date by which s/he must become certified, and the consequences for not becoming certified by the deadline.  Failure to become certified by the prescribed date will result in removal from the GS-102 occupation and may result in termination of employment.
