The Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center located in Cincinnati, OH is currently seeking Four (4) full time permanent Nursing Assistants for various floors at the Cincinnati VAMC.    These postion will report directly to the Nurse Manager of the unit you are selected for.  We are also looking for Six (6) intermittent Nursing Assistants for various floors.  If you are not selected for the full time positions you will be asked if you would be interested in the intermittent positions.

This announcement is for all U.S. Citizens that qualify.  These positions are also being announced to current Cincinnati VAMC employees under announcement VHA-NV-14-LAD-974652 opening on 10/10/2013 and closing on 10/23/2013.

 

WORK SCHEDULE:  The normal tour of duty for these positions are ROTATING SHIFTS & WEEKENDS.

Note:  The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-05.  The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-04 to GS-05.  The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate’s education and experience and recommend the grade and step at which the candidate will be placed.  The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

Full performance level duties will include, but are not limited to: 

  • Incumbent performs or assists patients with bathing, shaving, daily oral hygiene, denture care, feeding, dressing, positioning and transferring;
  • obtains vital signs;
  • assists patients with range of motion exercises;
  • applies and removes non-sterile dressings;
  • obtains and labels specimens;
  • assists physicians and nurses in diagnostic or therapeutic procedures;
  • provides post-mortem care;
  • performs simple, routine tests;
  • keeps bedside and nursing area clean;
  • provides urinary catheter care;
  • performs gastrostomy and nasogastric tube feedings 
  • Incumbent suctions tracheotomy, oral and nasopharyngeal;
  • irrigates colostomies;
  • provides pouching of stomas/ostomy care;
  • provides complex treatment modalities for skin care problems;
  • attends and participates in team meetings, ward conferences, and in-service programs;
  • updates patient medical records;
  • and performs other basic nursing care as required.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:   

  • U.S. citizenship.  Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.   

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Current STNA or CNA Certification is preferred

    2 years of experience as a Nursing Assistant or Patient Care Associate is preferred

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:  GS-4   6 months general and  6 months specialized experience or 2 years above high school with courses related to the occupation, if required
 
GS-5   1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 or a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation, if required
 
General Experience: (l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.

 

Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Applicants who have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience, as indicated in the table, are not required by this standard to have general experience, education above the high school level, or any additional specialized experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements.

 

Education: High school graduation or the equivalent is qualifying for GS-2.Successfully completed post-high school education is qualifying for grades GS-3 through GS-5. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school.

Physical Requirements: The population of male and female veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over.  The VA Medical Center is a major interdisciplinary teaching facility, serving medical, surgical, and neurological inpatients and outpatients.  There is a large outpatient psychiatric population, with admissions for medical co-morbidities.  This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity.  This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing.  Transferring patients and objects may be required.  The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures.  The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.  The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
