This is a temporary position, not to exceed 10/14/2014

 

The Medical Support Assistant (MSA) position serves as a Community Based Outpatient Clinic Clerk and is a foundational role within the VHA Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) initiative. Patient care is delivered in a team based model known as the teamlet. Members of the teamlet include the MSA, a Registered Nurse Care Manager, a Licensed Practical Nurse/Licensed Vocational Nurse and a primary care provider.

 

   The teamlet provides the majority of the healthcare needs for an assigned panel of patients.

 

   The teamlet works collaboratively with other members of an expanded health care primary care team including pharmacists, social workers, dieticians, behavioral health staff, etc. to provide a robust interdisciplinary approach to care.

 

   Important interfaces and collaborations also occur with larger health care system providers including VA and non VA specialists, hospitals, diagnostic and treating facilities, and community based programs.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Candidates must demonstrate the KSAs below:

a. Ability to collaborate, communicate, set priorities, and organize the work in order to meet deadlines, ensuring compliance with established processes, policies, and regulations.

b. Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively, both orally and in writing, in order to meet program objectives. This may include preparing reports in various formats and presenting data to various organizational levels.

c. Advanced knowledge of the technical health care process as it relates to access to care.

d. Advanced knowledge of managing a clinic. This includes independently utilizing reference sources, decision making, and empowering the team to collaborate and resolve problems within a complex systems environment.

e. Advanced knowledge of policies and procedures associated with operational activities that affect the patient flow, patient care, and the revenue process.

f. Advanced knowledge of medical terminology due to the technical nature of language utilized by clinicians.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-6 LEVEL:

One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. To be creditable, the experience must have demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) associated with current MSA responsibilities. Experience satisfying this requirement may be paid/non-paid employment as a MSA.

 

SUBSTITUTING EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-6 LEVEL: There is no education substitution for this level.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  The work is basically sedentary, but a great deal of moving to all parts of the Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) is required since the incumbent will be working with a variety of clinical and administrative services. Other physical demands include reaching, bending, stretching, and carrying light loads of supplies, near vision correctable at 13” to 16”; hearing (aid permitted).
