Basic Qualifications:Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience directly related to this position should be documented in the online application or resume.
Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
For the GS-07 position, in addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have had one (1) year of specialized experience at least equivalent to GS-06: Served on a specialty crew (hotshot, helitack, engines, etc.) or assigned to lead fire suppression under the most adverse conditions of climate, fuels, and terrain. Performed interdisciplinary tactical methods and techniques for use of water and other additives in controlling and mopping-up fires in order to efficiently and effectively accomplish operations where water was in short supply.
For the GS-08 position, in addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have had one (1) year of specialized experience at least equivalent to GS-07: Independently practiced methods and procedures associated with wildland suppression to resolve a full range of irregular or problem situations when suppressing wildland fires. Coordinated and assisted in the development of fire/aviation training and instructional curriculum. Independently performed many technical specializations such as felling and saw repair used in fire suppression and prescribed burning.
Substitution of Education for Experience:
The experience requirements for the GS-7 level may be met by completion of one (1) year of graduate level education in a position-related field of forestry or natural resources management.
For the GS-08 there is no substitution of education for experience for this position.
Combination of Education and Experience: GS-07 equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and experience may be used to meet the experience requirements.
For the GS-08 there is no combination of education and experience for this position.
Selective Placement Factor
- A minimum 90 days experience performing wildland fire suppression duties as a member of an organized fire suppression crew or comparable unit that utilized knowledge of wildland fire suppression, containment or control techniques and practicesunder various conditions. This experience must be documented with specific dates and detailed duties that show your 90 days of on-the-line experience in the online application or resume.
- To determine your eligibility for a primary firefighter position, indicate whether you meet the following age requirement: I am under age 37; OR, after subtracting the months of Federal Service worked in a primary firefighter/law enforcement position, I am less than age 37; OR I am a veteran’s preference eligible, I am older than age 37 and am requesting a waiver to the maximum age requirement.
- Successfully completed the Primary NWCG Core Requirement of Crew Boss (CRWB). A copy of the Incident Qualification and Certification System (IQCS) Master Record (or equivalent training document) which contains documented proof of my certification or attainment of this requirement will be attached to my application.
- Successfully completed the Secondary NWCG Core Requirement of Incident Commander Type 5 (ICT5).. WORK CAPACITY TEST (WCT) for Wildland Firefighters: This position participates in wildland firefighting activities. Based on the type of work performed, TAKING and PASSING the WCT at the ARDUOUS level is a "condition of employment." The Arduous fitness (Pack) test requires completing a three (3) mile hike within forty-five (45) minutes, while carrying a forty-five (45) pound pack. You are strongly encouraged to consult with your physician and begin training immediately if applying for this position.
ARDUOUS FIRE POSITIONS: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be employed in a position performing hazardous duties. An initial pre-employment medical examination is required for arduous fire positions. Failure to meet any of the required medical qualifications will be considered disqualifying for employment.
HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:
You will be evaluated in accordance with the category rating procedure as defined in the USDA Demonstration Project Plan. Applicants who meet the basic minimum qualification requirements established for the position will be placed in the Eligible category. Eligible applicants will be further evaluated against criteria for placement in the Quality category. This evaluation is based on the level of your experience, education, and/or training as determined by your responses to the Occupational Questionnaire. Applicants with veterans’ preference are listed ahead of applicants who do not have veterans’ preference within each category.
