The NASA Pathways Intern Program provides students with the opportunity to explore NASA careers and gain meaningful developmental work experience. This is an internship position as part of a work/study program. The work may involve trainee duties at NASA located at Kennedy Space Center, FL. This position is for students that have been accepted for enrollment or are currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma) in a qualifying educational institution on a full or half-time basis. NASA/KSC may non-competitively promote and convert an intern to a career/career-conditional or term appointment within 120 calendar days after completing the educational requirements and Pathway Program specifics. Conversion to a permanent or term position is NOT guaranteed and is based on the need of the agency. The Pathways Program confers no right to further employment in the competitive or excepted service. The Ground Processing Directorate is responsible for providing spaceflight hardware ground processing activities, launch operations, ground systems operations and maintenance, and logistics support to NASA, other government agencies and commercial customers at KSC. The NASA Air Force Management Office (NAMO) and the KSC Weather Office are also resident with the Ground Processing Directorate.

This is an Excepted Service position.

The following grade levels will be considered GS-4/5/6/7.

Selectee will be placed within the Ground Processing Directorate.

The Pathways Intern Employment Program was established in the excepted service and provides for planned, progressive education studies at an accredited institution. Position grade levels will be determined by academic achievement. Students advance to higher grades as education is completed and approved by management. This is a traditional intern position, which means that the selectee may work alternating semesters of work with semesters of study throughout his/her matriculation.

Participates in NASA's Pathways Intern Employment Program (IEP). This is a formal training program consisting of rotational periods of study and work. Specialized training is designed to accelerate an employee to the full performance level. Participant completes assigned duties, tasks, readings, and developmental activities specified in the Program. Participants receive formal periodic assessments of progress and sign a Pathways Agreement.

NASA/KSC Pathways Program candidates will need to meet the qualification requirements consistent with OPM (Office of Personnel Management) qualification standards applicable to the position being filled. Requirements for levels:

GS-4: Completion of 1 academic year of post-high school study (the 1 academic year is the equivalent to 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours)

GS-5: Completion of 2 academic years of post-high school study (the equivalent to 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours)

GS-6: Completion of 3 academic years of post-high school study (the equivalent to 90 semester hours or 135 quarter hours)

GS-7: Completion of 4 academic years of post-high school study (or all the requirements) for a bachelor's degree and accepted into a master' program.

Note: An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university.

The required education must lead to a bachelor's degree with specialization in a directly related field to the position in which the student trainee will participate in the intern program. The degree of specialization in this field must satisfy on graduation the specific educational requirements in the qualification standard for the corresponding position.

IF converted, upon completion of the program there may be promotion potential up to a GS-13.

**Majors may require supplemental coursework in order to be eligible for conversion to a full-time permanent AST engineering employee after completing the Pathways Program and after completing the degree with which you have been accepted into the program.

To be eligible for conversion to a permanent or term position, Interns must:
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Be at least 16 years of age by closing date of announcement.
- Complete at least 640 hours or work experience acquired through the Internship Program.
- Complete their degree or certificate requirement
- Meet the Office of Personnel Management's qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted.
- Meet Agency-specified requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement, and;
- Perform their job successfully as documented through performance evaluations and/or completion of the individual Development Plan (IDP).

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

Candidates will be evaluated to determine if they meet the Pathways Program and position requirements. Candidates must meet the qualification requirements consistent with NASA and the OPM qualification standards applicable to the position being filled. Where appropriate, candidates will be required to meet NASA's Aeronautics, Scientific, and Technical (AST) qualification standards for the position(s) for which they are applying. Candidates who meet these requirements may be further evaluated. Veteran's preference will then be applied in accordance with 5 CFR Part 302. If candidates are further evaluated using NASA's quality rating process, qualified veterans have absolute preference within the appropriate category.

OTHER INFORMATION:

The Pathways Program provides work experience that is directly related to the student's academic program and career goals. This allows KSC to discover firsthand the abilities of a potential employee and give managers the ability to evaluate the students' performance in real work situations. The benefit to the student is exposure to public service while enhancing their educational goals and shaping their career choices. Students under the Pathways Program MAY be non-competitively converted to a career conditional appointment following completion of their academic and work experience requirements. Available offers of permanent employment will be dependent upon budget and the availability of positions.

When reporting to KSC for a work rotation, travel expenses are paid by NASA KSC from the Intern's university to the Center and return.

Work Schedule:
Interns may work full-time or part-time schedules (Flexible hours and days depending on the student's academic schedule and the work requirements of the position).
