Duties: The Outpatient Pharmacy Technician at the McGuire VA Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia serves as a direct assistant to the Pharmacist. The Pharmacy Technician must have an understanding of the work flow, routine, and responsibilities of the Pharmacy program; and, must be able to work both independently and under the direction of a Pharmacist. Outpatient Pharmacy Technician duties and responsibilities include:

  • Receives and reviews pharmacy dispensing orders for accuracy of information, duplication, and authorization for dispensing in order to process.
  • Prepares and dispenses medication and supplies for outpatients, subject to the final check by a pharmacist.
  • Prepackages medication in unit of use or unit dose packaging utilizing automatic equipment.
  • Provides technical support for the outpatient medication program. Processes medication orders and fills medication orders.
  • Inventories and replenishes emergency carts.
  • Packages prescriptions for mailing utilizing proper packaging materials required to protect medications from damage during shipping. 
  • Assists in ordering, checking, and stocking of medication and supplies, ensuring that drug supplies are adequately maintained in sufficient quantities to meet daily usage needs. 
  • Maintains in date stock medication throughout the medical center. Replaces outdated drugs in clinic areas automated dispensing machines. 
  • Maintains appropriate medication dispensing records and provides information for medication use reviews and pharmacy reports.

Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM or 9:30 AM - 6:00 PM OR M-Sat w/day off during the week.

Licensure: 

  • PTCB certification is required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Position requires repetitive motion, standing, walking, reaching, stooping, lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds, pushing heavy or bulky carts and at times may be physically demanding, sometimes for extended periods of time.

English Language Proficiency: 

  • Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). 

Grade Requirements:  

One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-5 level in Federal Service). Candidates application package must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.
  • Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.
  • Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.
  • Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.
