The Phoenix VA Health Care System is currently recruiting for a Health Technician (Dietetic) Student Trainee (PATHWAYS INTERN)

This position is located in the Food Service department, therefore, the ideal candidate should be pursuing a culinary/food service type degree.

PATHWAYS PROGRAM: The purpose of the Pathways Internship Program is to provide students with exposure to public service, enhance their educational experience, and provide financial support to encourage and support their educational goals. An opportunity may arise in which you could noncompetitively convert into the competitive service within 120 days after you have completed all Internship Program requirements for conversion. Conversion is not guaranteed. A position must be available and program eligibility requirements must be met.

Duties and Responsibilities: Incumbent functions as a Health Technician in the Nutrition Hospitality unit of Nutrition and Food Service, performing an essential role in the provision of customer service and satisfying meal service to the hospitalized veteran. Greets and welcomes all new admittedly patients to assigned wards within 24 hours of admissions. Obtains and/or reviews patient food preferences. States food allergies and religious and/or cultural food restrictions for referred to the assigned Dietetic Technician or Dietitian. Explains, and reviews all necessary paperwork and audits. Provides personal care and grooming kits to all patients on assigned wards. Kits are to be recorded and requested daily. Edits patient’s tray tickets with missing food items, according to individual patients’ diet pattern and the daily diet menu. Provides relief coverage for Clothing Room/ Patient Funds Clerk, and NCC Health Technician to ensure patient care coverage is met. Also provides Clothing Room coverage on weekends, and off-hours on an on-call basis and coverage for Food Service Associates, as assigned.

Work Schedule: Part-time, 13 hours per week- work schedule dependent on school schedule.

TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THIS INTERNSHIP THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET: 
1. U.S. Citizen
2. At least 16 years of age by the closing date of this announcement.
3. Enrolled or accepted for enrollment in degree or certificate program at a qualifying educational institution on a full or half-time basis;
4. If enrolled, you must be in good academic standing (At least a 2.75 GPA); TRANSCRIPTS OR PROOF OF ENROLLMENT/ACCEPTANCE MUST BE SUBMITTED.
5. You must maintain student eligibility and enrollment for the duration of the internship.  If you cannot, you are ineligible for this program. 
**If selected, you will be required to sign a Pathways Participant Agreement (memorandum of understanding).

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
GS-4: Applicants must have 6 months of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience.  Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:  working and applying knowledge of basic nutrition and modified diets, interpreting the Daily Diet menu and adjusting diet cards and tray tickets. 
    OR
Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position (i.e. nutrition).

GS-5: Applicants must have One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-4) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.  Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:  working and applying knowledge of basic nutrition and modified diets, interpreting the Daily Diet menu and adjusting diet cards and tray tickets. 
   OR
Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-5 level. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a  bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position (i.e. nutrition).
   OR
Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-5 level.  To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned).  Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess.  Add the two percentages.  The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-5. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position.
A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.

NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month & year starting and ending dates AND hours worked per week. A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.  Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  The work is primarily sedentary. There may be some standing and walking throuhout the hospital and to outlying buildings. There is an occasional requirement for stooping and lifting or carrying books, boxes of computer paper and related materials.

Your resume must also display the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other characteristics (KSAOs) in support of the assessment questionaire for this position:

KSA 1 – Ability to maintain good public relations with patients, families, staff and the general public.
KSA 2 - Knowledge to perform applicable duties as a dietetic health technician in accordance with policies and procedures.
KSA 3 - Knowledge of basic nutrition and modified diets including patterns for regular and modified diets.
kSA 4-  Knowledge of tray line set up, assembly and mechanic of tray distribution and pick up.
KSA 5-Knowledge of admission process, reception procedures/protocols, and admission terminology and paperwork.
