 VA Long Beach Healthcare System (VALBHS) is one of the Department of Veterans Affairs largest tertiary care facilities and is classified as a Clinical Referral Level 1B Facility. VALBHS is a part of the VA Desert Pacific Healthcare Network, which includes facilities in Las Vegas, Loma Linda, San Diego and Greater Los Angeles.

VALBHS is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research. With active affiliations with the University of California at Irvine Medical School, medical residents, interns, and students are trained at VALBHS each year. In collaboration with California State University Dominguez Hills, VALBHS operates an onsite Prosthetic School and with California State University Long Beach, will soon have a state-of-the-art Child Development Center for employees and Veteran families.

VA Long Beach Healthcare System consists of the Anaheim Vet Center and five community clinics located in Anaheim, Santa Ana, Laguna Hills in Orange County and The Villages at Cabrillo in Long Beach, and Whittier-Santa Fe Springs in LA County and the main campus is adjacent to California State University Long Beach.

Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care, tertiary care, and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, spinal cord injury, geriatrics, extended care, and VA Center of Excellence for Stress & Mental Health, Mental Illness Rehabilitation, Education, and Clinical Centers (MIRECC). The facility operates 304 hospital beds, which includes 120 Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) beds- the largest SCI Center in the nation and 24 beds in their state-of-the-art Blind Rehabilitation Center, dedicated in 2012. Additionally, VALBHS operates a 110-bed Nursing Home Care Unit. 

 In 2011, VALBHS initiated design for a new Inpatient & Outpatient Mental Health Building as well as a 110 bed Community Living Center, with anticipated construction in 2015.

The strategic direction of the VA Long Beach Healthcare System (VALBHS) is to address an expanding market share while improving access to care and financial viability, align services to meet demand, continue to improve on performance measures, ensure a qualified and diverse workforce, maintain leadership in research and training, and ensure a seamless transition for returning war Veterans 

VA structures its SES positions into pay bands.  This is a pay band 1 position and the salary range is $119,554-179,700.  Exceptions to the salary cap may be considered in certain circumstances.

Permanent Change of Station (PCS) costs, a recruitment/ relocation incentive and/ or Appraised Value Offer (formerly Guaranteed Home Buyout) may be authorized.

  

Duties

The Health System Administrator (Medical Center Director), reports to the Network Director, VA Desert Pacific Healthcare Network, VISN 22. The position requires the effective and economical direction, control, and operation of VA Long Beach Healthcare System. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Full delegated line authority and responsibility for executive level management.

Overall responsibility for planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, controlling, reviewing, evaluating and improving medical, administrative, and supporting the operations of a health care system. Determines program goals and objectives, and develops short- and long-range plans for achieving them; plans include adjustments to improve delivery of patient care services.

Provides executive leadership and direction to subordinate organizations.

Develops and coordinates a quality assurance program to ensure compliance with standards issued by accrediting and regulatory groups.

Allocates and manages available resources (financial and personnel) to provide quality health care.

Captures changing needs of varying customers via outreach in Veteran communities, conventions, etc.,and works effectively with all stakeholders to achieve optimum outcomes.
