This position is located in the Caliciviruses Section (CS) of the Laboratory of Infectious Diseases (LID), with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the NIH in Bethesda, MD.

If selected for this position, you will perform the following duties:

  • Discuss the scope and objectives of the research project with the research scientist.
  • Perform experiments in accordance with approved methods and procedures.
  • Develop methods and collect, organize and record experimental data in a form suitable for publication and future reference by others.
  • Organize and maintain the research laboratory areas.

Basic Qualification Requirements:

A. You must have completed the requirements for a bachelor’s (or higher level) degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms and at least 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.

OR

B. You must have a combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science or related disciplines appropriate to this position (including the courses shown in A above), AND have appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position.


In addition to meeting the basic qualification requirements indicated above, you must meet the additional experience and/or education requirement as described below:

 

GS-9 - You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: carrying out given portions of an overall experiment under the guidance of the microbiologist responsible for the research project; performing routine analysis of data, applying standard statistical methods, analysis of variance and regression and correlation analysis; organizing and maintaining research laboratory including ordering supplies and hazardous/controlled substances; conducting regular checks of lab for hazardous contamination levels.
OR

Have completed two (2) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or have a master's or equivalent graduate degree.
OR

Have a combination of graduate level education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

 

GS-11 - You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks:  carrying out given portions of an overall experiment under the guidance of the microbiologist responsible for the research project; developing a strain of microorganism resistant to a given antibiotic; performing microbiological diagnostic services in a medical laboratory; calibrating and operating sophisticated laboratory instruments; rendering advice to physicians on such problems as appropriate diagnostic tests, antibiotic therapy, and special sterilization procedures; etc
OR

Have completed three (3) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.

OR

Have a combination of graduate level education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
