This is the position ofInformation Technology Specialist (Applications Software) in the Atomic and Molecular Physics Division of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. The employee will be assigned to the Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution (TEMPO) Earth satellite project. The employee will be part of a team working to design, develop and implement software for the TEMPO Ground System, including the Science Data Processing Center (SDPC) and Instrument Operations Center (IOC). The software will include operational processing algorithms for production of Level-1, Level-2 and higher data products for gases, aerosols, clouds, and ultraviolet radiation; capability to command the TEMPO instrument; capability to perform analysis of instrument health, safety, and trending. Components include metadata standards, data model, data access layer, query language, registry, grid, and web services. Work may include building connections with a NASA-selected Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC) and development of data processing and analysis software to interface to the DAAC. The software will support user queries, data retrieval, and analysis and display of Earth science data. The employee reports to the TEMPO Principal Investigator, Dr. Kelly Chance and works closely with the Data Manager and other members of the team of scientists and programmers participating in the TEMPO project.
Duties at the grade 9 level may include, but are not limited to: designing software and participate in all phases of software development lifecycle; designing and generating code following NASA Earth science satellite mission data systems requirements; designing, coding and debugging complex software to support the TEMPO project.
In addition to the duties at the grade 9 level, duties at the grade 11 may include but are not limited to defining system requirements to develop and evaluate systems by working with engineers and scientists.
In addition to the duties above, duties at the grade 12 level may include but are not limited to: providing schedule assessment from a technical standpoint, technical guidance to other team members, and overall integration of software modules and other system components and overseeing the translation of design into code.
In addition to the duties above, duties at the grade 13 level may include but are not limited to: analyzing hardware requirements and developing system requirements by evaluating technology and user needs.
