The Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center is a 673-bed tertiary healthcare facility which provides care to over 100,000 veterans in northern Ohio. We provide care through our main medical facility at the Wade Park campus, 13 community based outpatient clinics, and 3 vet centers. The medical center has been recognized for more programs of excellence than any other Veterans Affairs Medical Center. These programs of excellence include: Open Heart Surgery, Care of the Seriously Mentally Ill, Geriatric Evaluation and Management, Substance Abuse Care, Spinal Cord Injury Care, Medical Care of the Homeless, Domiciliary Care of the Homeless, Functional Electrical Stimulation, Advance Platform Technology, Primary Care Education, and Patient-Centered Specialty Care Education. The Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center is recruiting for an Associate Chief Nurse (Spinal Cord Injury/Nursing Systems). The Associate Chief Nurse will function in Nursing Service. The Associate Chief Nurse duties include:

  • Establishing, maintaining, and providing oversight for the delivery of nursing care for Spinal Cord Injury programs, including acute care (34 beds), long-term care (34 beds), and outpatient programs .
  • Managing integrated programs that support patient care across service lines, including, but not limited to, the float and intermittent pools, the IV team, the wound care team, the Nursing Supervisors, nursing escorts, and the CMS students.
  • Maintaining accountability for population groups of integrated programs that cross service and/or discipline lines and influence the organizational mission and healthcare of Veterans.
  • Leading and mentoring for special projects for the service.
  • Providing leadership in the implementation of current patient care standards and nursing practice standards, to measure, assess, and improve patient outcomes related to nursing service.
  • Promoting, coordinating, and evaluating healthcare delivery for the assigned service, ensuring consistency of nursing operations across all environments of care.
  • Developing and reviewing Nursing Service policies and procedures related to professional policies, procedures, and standards which guide nursing practice across the continuum of care.
  • Collaborating with the AD/PCNS to develop and implement organization-wide patient care programs consistent with standards of professional practice as required by accrediting bodies and applicable regulations (e.g., CARF, The Joint Commission).
  • Assuming leadership role in resolving highly complex ethical issues that have an impact upon the health care delivery system and/or the consumer within the organization and/or the community.
  • Providing leadership in the development of policies and systems to devise strategies that will enable the organization to successfully manage bioethical issues and protect patient and family rights.
  • Collaborating with the executive team in the planning and managing of facility resources consistent with the goals of the organization.
  • Ensuring systematic and ongoing assessments and improvement of patient processes and outcomes.
  • Participating in the development of education programs and staff development models to facilitate career progression and to increase productivity and performance.

Work Schedule: Day shift with 24 hour accountability

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following requirements:

  • Citizen of the United States.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:  The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in any State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.  In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows:

  • Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization.
  • Professional Development: performance, education/career development.
  • Collaboration: collaboration, collegiality.
  • Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Nurse IV - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 4-5 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 3-4 years experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in spinal cord injury, acute care, rehabilitation, or long term care.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a supervisory or administrative position with progressive responsibilities.
  • Certified Nurse Executive by ANCC.
