The Government Accountability Office (GAO) supports the U.S. Congress in its constitutional responsibilities to legislate, appropriate, and oversee the Federal government for the benefit of the American people.  The GAO, commonly referred to as the investigative arm of Congress, or the congressional watchdog, is independent and nonpartisan.  The GAO assists Congress in making informed decisions by providing information on policy and program issues, as well as by providing recommendations to make government more effective and responsive. 

The Forensic Audit and Investigative Services (FAIS) team is responsible for conducting high-quality forensic audits; investigations of fraud, waste, and abuse; evaluations of security vulnerabilities; and other investigative services.

  • Plans and executes the functions involved in the administrative and clerical operations of Forensic Audit and Investigative Services (FAIS) thus relieving the Managing Director and other senior staff of many details in order that they may devote time to overall program management and operations of the office.
  • Maintains the critical standard tracking and analysis databases and prepares reports using these systems (e.g. Mission and Assignment Tracking System (MATS) and Job Information System (JIS) data bases), reviews the information and forms for accuracy and completeness, assists with correcting errors, serves as a focal point and resource for team staff in maintaining the data to assist the team in meeting its performance goals and project milestones.  When collecting data for system updates provides instructions to staff and coordinates with other GAO teams and offices.   
  • Performs a variety of duties to facilitate administrative support functions, travel, MATS and JIS data entry, and acquisition of supplies for the office.  Also performs duties to support general office operations and meeting arrangements. 
  • Maintains and tracks FAIS assigned budget for the office, monitoring expenditures such as training, travel or awards.  Assists in the preparation of budget formulation requests for each fiscal year; providing budget reports to management; monitoring office purchases and maintaining financial spreadsheets; reconciling accounts with the GAO standard financial management reporting systems and reprogramming funds.
  • Receives and screens incoming calls and visitors as backup to the Executive Assistant and determines identity of caller and nature of business.  Utilizes discretion and judgment in screening visitors and prioritizing calls.  Screens inquiries and, based on assessment of information needed, directs to appropriate GAO staff member or Managing Director for follow-up action. 
  • Maintains and updates automated and manual systems used both FAIS specific and GAO-wide.
  • Serves as primary coordinator and point of contact for tracking, coordinating, and monitoring a wide variety of administrative procedures and activities in support of the FAIS team and its mission.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Applicants must have at least one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at the next lower level/band, equivalent to the GS-9 level, which has equipped the applicant with the skills and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position.  To be creditable, specialized experience is defined as experience managing complex and varied administrative support duties including preparing budget formulation requests and tracking budgetary expenditures; ensuring the accuracy and completeness of data within large databases as well as maintaining and updating automated and manual tracking systems; collaborating with staff, teams, and organizations to coordinate and lead administrative projects; facilitating workflow of a team, ensuring assignments are completed in a timely manner; and making travel arrangements and coordinating meetings.
