The Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center is a 673-bed tertiary healthcare facility which provides care to over 100,000 veterans in northern Ohio. We provide care through our main medical facility at the Wade Park campus, 13 community based outpatient clinics, and 3 vet centers. The Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center is recruiting for a Supervisory Medical Technologist. The Supervisory Medical Technologist will function within the Microbiology Section of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. The Supervisory Medical Technologist duties include:

·         Reviewing all of the Microbiology results and creating monthly reports and statistics that can easily be accessed and reviewed. ·Providing technical guidance to technicians when identification and susceptibility problems arise and when quality control or instrument problems occur.

·         Designing daily work sheets, overseeing the recording of these worksheets by technicians, and complying with the quarterly report for the section.

·         Designing and preparing appropriate instrument maintenance logs, reviewing these logs monthly and assuring that proper routine maintenance us being done by technicians.

·         Writing and updating procedure manuals in the Microbiology Department, which includes sections of Specimen Processing, Bacteriology, Mycology, Mycobacteriology, Virology, and Molecular Testing. ·Writing and updating procedural manuals in the Microbiology Department, which includes the above mentioned sections.

·         Evaluating and implementing the use of new methodologies and instrumentation in the section.

·         Maintaining appropriate levels of supplies and reagents for the efficient operation of the department and submitting appropriate MSDS for the reagents that require them.

·         Taking responsibility for the day-to-day supervision of the section, preparing work schedules and assigning duties to subordinates to assure efficient and timely performance of all microbiology tests and procedures.

·         Ensuring activities associated with process improvement, customer service, data driven decision making, or team driven change are accomplished. ·Implementing the performance of CAP survey unknown specimens by technicians in the section and preparing appropriate work sheets for the Quality Control Technologist.

·         Assuring all employees under supervision are aware of and abide by the appropriate hospital and laboratory safety regulations. ·Taking responsibility for the quality control program for the section, assuring that appropriate records are maintained and investigating complaints from the hospital staff concerning questionable results.

·         Coordinating waste disposal and biosafety with the Laboratory Safety Officer and ensuring staff compliance within procedures of the section.

·         Managing routine personnel matters related to the unit, such as performance appraisals, awards, disciplinary actions and recruitment.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm, off-hour shifts, weekends and holidays.

Basic Requirements:

Education and/or Experience Combination. An associate’s degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or an equivalent program composed of at least 60 semester hours, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either: (a) 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or (b) 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry; 6 semester hours of biology; and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; and have laboratory training that includes completion of a NAACLS approved clinical laboratory training program with at least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty that the individual performs high complexity testing. In addition to the associate’s degree, must possess at least 3 years of directly related, full time work experience.

Certification. All candidates must currently possess or be eligible for and pass within one year the appropriate certification examination as a medical technologist or clinical laboratory scientist given by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry (ASCP-BOR), the National Credentialing Agency (NCA), American Association of Clinical Chemists (AACC) or American Medical Technologists (AMT), or the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB).

Grade Determinations:

GS-12 Experience: One year of credible, progressively responsible experience comparable to the GS-11 level in federal service, and must fully meet the knowledge skills and abilities at the GS-11 level. Examples of qualifying experience would include: developing new policies and guidelines, formulating plans, and judging effectiveness of operations, applying knowledge of laboratory quality management procedures and principles, analyzing organizational, technical, and administrative problems to develop and impliment solutions that result in efficient overall laboratory operations, successfully applying principles and techniques of sound human resources and labor management.
