·         Plans, implements, and evaluate comprehensive field environmental health programs for assigned tribes.

·         Conducts surveys of facilities, write and present reports of findings; conducts investigations of emergent Environmental Health problems.

·         Develops Environmental Health and occupational safety and health policies, regulations, codes, etc.

·         Provides technical consultation by assisting with Environmental Health hazard identification and mitigation.

DEGREE (4 year): Major study in an academic field related to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position.





In addition to meeting the basic qualification requirement above, applicants must have specialized experience and/or directly related education in the amounts shown:


·         GS-07:  One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level; OR, One (1) year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement

·         GS-09:  One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level; OR, Two (2) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree; OR, Master's or equivalent graduate degree.

·         GS-11:  One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level; OR, Three (3) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree;  OR, Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.



SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:  Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.





·         For GS-07: Ability to utilize Environmental Health references, guidelines, policies, regulations, precedents, and work directions for application to specific cases or problems.  Experience in working with word processing, spreadsheets, database and PowerPoint presentation, statistical analysis, GPS and other software used in the environmental health field.  Has a basic understanding of biology, microbiology, chemistry and scientific methods.  Ability to present scientific & public health material to community leaders and the general public.   Ability to plan and carry out work activities, this skill would be demonstrated through current or past work activity or by completion of advanced course work culminating in a degree.  Ability to take and follow direction.   

·         For GS-09: Working knowledge of Environmental Health practices by “in-training” status for professional registration from a recognized entity like National Environmental Health Association (NEHA);  Knowledge of policies and practices of the Area Division of Environmental Health Services.  Utilize Environmental Health references, guidelines, policies, regulations, precedents, and work directions for application to specific cases or problems;  Skill in working with word processing, spreadsheets, database and PowerPoint presentation, statistical analysis, GPS and other software used in the environmental health field.

·         For GS-11: Independently conducting environmental health facility surveys, special environmental health investigations, developing effective environmental health training resources and environmental health/injury prevention data analysis is required.  Independently developing and presenting environmental health survey analysis information to stakeholders.  Formulating final environmental health plans, development of large scale environmental health strategies.  Involvement in strategic planning initiatives.    

TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: Federal status applicants must have completed at least 52 weeks of service in a position no more than one grade lower than the position to be filled. This is usually is used in reference to the length of time needed to satisfy the promotion requirements of the next highest level. If selected under the Excepted Service Examining Plan, individuals may be appointed without regard to time-in-grade requirements.
