This position is located at San Juan National Historic Site.  San Juan National Historic Site consists of a system of 400+ year Spanish fortifications and bastions that encircle the 500-year old City of San Juan, Puerto Rico.  Puerto Rico is the smallest island of the Greater Antilles chain.  The island is 35 miles wide and 100 miles long with the highest elevation of 3000 feet;   average island temperatures year round is 82-87 degrees during the day and 72-77 degrees at night.  The San Juan metropolitan area has all amenities including excellent health services and retail stores.  Recreational opportunities can be found island wide.  San Juan airport is located 7 miles from the park and is serviced by most major airlines with nonstop flights to major hubs.  Flight time to Miami is 2.5 hours and Atlanta is 3.5 hours.  Cost of living is considered moderate.  Puerto Rico has a 7% sales tax.



This is full-time temporary employment, not-to-exceed 1 year.  Appointment may be extended for an additonal year, depending on the status of project completion or funding.


The primary purpose of this position is to perform janitorial and custodial work such as sweeping, scrubbing and waxing floors, washing windows and walls, dusting and polishing furniture and fixtures.  Work is done with hand or with powered equipment.

Incumbent will use a variety of hand and power tools such as buffers, vacuum cleaners, ladders, pails, mops, brooms, etc.   Will scrub, strip, wax and polish floors; vacuum cleans rugs; use various products to clean and maintain all kind of floors and furniture.  Keep areas clean and in order; moves light to heavy boxes or obstacles in order to clean up the area and picks up trash and other materials.  Removes trash and scrap from areas to central pick up point; wipes benches, office furniture, cleans toilet bowls, sinks, urinals, and empties waste baskets from all office buildings.

Incumbent is responsible for the proper care of hand tools and equipment; will follow instructions given on particular work order to be done.

  • Ability to perform custodial duties.  
  •  Ability to perform grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to safely use a variety of power and hand tools.

Appointee of this position will be required to wear the National Park Service uniform in accordance with applicable policies.

Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle.  You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued drive'rs license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists.  Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Moderately heavy physical effort is required of this position when using ladder and scaffolds to clean walls, ceilings, windows, ceiling fixtures, etc, operating powered equipment, removing cans of or other containers of trash; and occasionally lifts objects weighing over 50 pounds. 


WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is usually indoors in areas which normally have adequate heat, light, and ventilation.  Is exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skill irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors, etc.  Occasionally works outdoors in possible inclement weather conditions and/or extreme temperatures.
