The Supervisory Railroad Safety Specialist (HazMat) works in a Regional Office of the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Office of Safety, or a telework location approved by the FRA. The FRA Office of Safety promotes and regulates safety throughout the Nation's railroad industry. This position is the regional expert responsible for the interpretation and administration of FRA regulations and procedures concerning hazardous materials, and is responsible for supervising approximately 7 to 14 Railroad Safety Inspectors.
The IDEAL CANDIDATE for this position is a mission focused professional who has experience providing guidance, interpretation, and enforcement of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and FRA regulations and procedures concerning rail transport of hazardous materials. Experience should include developing and delivering training on rules regulatory issues pertaining to the transportation of hazardous materials by rail to offerors, railroad officials, manufactures, railroad union officials, members of Federal, State and other local regulatory and emergency response agencies. Additional experience should include familiarization and a working knowledge of bulk packaging nomenclature, design, construction, qualification and maintenance.
PLEASE NOTE: There is only one position, which can be filled in either of the duty locations advertised. This position is eligible for full-time telework, and the selectee must reside (or be willing to move at his/her own expense) within the geographic area(s) of the duty location(s) stated above. Supervisory Railroad Safety Specialists serving a probationary period will not be approved for full-time telework without the expressed authorization of the Regional Administrator. The duty location for a full-time teleworker is usually the residence or other approved telework site. The actual duty location will be subject to approval by the Regional Administrator. Salary will be adjusted based on the duty location.
