Position assignment is in the Minneapolis VA Health Care System, Extended Care, PM&R Community Living Center (CLC) transitional care unit.  

   

Incumbent provides rehabilitative, medical and post-op surgical care to veterans of all ages but with a focus on the geriatric population. The average length of stay is 29 days. Providers work in interdisciplinary teams with social workers, therapists, dieticians and others. The environment is fast paced and collegial. The PA position demands strong problem-solving skills and sophisticated interpersonal communication ability.

The CLC Physician Assistant works with collaborating physicians to provide primary care to a panel of approximately 24 patients per PA/MD team. Duties include performing admission history and physical exams, writing orders, prescribing medications, developing treatment plans and assessing patients throughout their stay on CLC. PAs serve as clinical role models and frequently provide bedside education for nursing and other staff. They are seen as leaders who are expected to engage with the entire treatment team to create individualized care plans, attend interdisciplinary team meetings and guide the team in discharge planning, participate in Continuous Improvement activities and, according to the individual Practitioner’s interests, in various initiatives to improve the overall CLC program.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

1.  Citizenship.  Citizen of the United States.  (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)

 

2.  Education or Training.  The candidate must meet one of the following:

    (1)  A bachelor’s degree from a PA training program which is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA); or

    (2)  Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a bachelor’s degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science; or

    (3)  Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a period of progressively responsible health care experience such as an independent duty medical corpsman, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, medical technologist, or medical technician.  The duration of approved academic training and health care experience must total at least 5 years.

3. Certification.  As of March 12, 1993, certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician’s Assistants (NCCPA) is a requirement for employment.  This requirement does not apply to non-certified PAs on VA rolls as of that date.

4. English Language Proficiency.  PAs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
