 The new Greenville VA Health Care Center is anticipated to serve 19,000 patients for specialty care. The new multispecialty Health Care Center is scheduled to begin operations in early 2014 building on a growing partnership with East Carolina University's Brody School of Medicine.

Greenville is home to 27,000 students who attend East Carolina University. ECU offers a wide range of cultural and sporting events, including musical concerts, theatrical and dance productions, travel films and lectures. The Greenville Museum of Art contains local art, as well as rotating exhibitions. Theater is beginning to emerge in Greenville as well. Local groups such as the Greenville Theater Project and the Magnolia Arts Center offer outlets for both performers and audiences alike. Many restaurants offer live entertainment on the weekends. Uptown Greenville is a revitalization non-profit that promotes numerous events in the downtown district. The downtown area of Greenville is known for its large annual Halloween Street party.

Greenville is located 80 miles from the Crystal Coast Beaches, including Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle, historic Beaufort and Morehead City. We are also within commuting distance of the waterfront towns of Washington and New Bern. Greenville is located 80 miles east of the capital city, Raleigh.

The Chief of Mental Health and Social Work Department provides administrative, programmatic and clinical leadership for Mental Health and Social work sections at Greenville VA Health Care Center to ensure achievement of the clinical, research, and education goals. The incumbent reports to the Health Care Center Associate Chief of Staff and serves as a key clinical resource for the Health Care Center Administrator, Durham VA Medical Center, Chief of Staff, Chief Of Mental Health and Chief of Social Work.

The responsibilities include hands on clinical work, oversight and administration of all aspects of the department, including research program and guidance and training for medical residents and other trainees at the Health Care Center in collaboration with the Mental Health Service and the Social Work Service at the Durham VAMC.

The selected candidate will serve as the Chief, Department of Mental Health and Social Work at the Greenville VA Health Care Center with a dual appointment at the East Carolina University, Brody School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatric Medicine. This Department of Mental Health and Social Work at the Greenville VA Health Care will consist of a Mental Health section and a Social Work section. This selected physician will have responsibility as Department Chief as well as provide clinical care to adult patients in their specialty.  Physician reports to the Health Care Center (HCC) Associate Chief of Staff and serves as a key clinical resource for the HCC Administrator, Durham VA Medical Center Director, Chief of Staff, Chief of Psychiatry and Chief of Social Work. The Physician will provide clinical direction to all mental health and social work sub-specialty areas to optimize patient health and work seamlessly with multi-disciplinary team members. The Physician and his/her teams will support Veteran health care goals and patient satisfaction. The selectee will provide team guidance in patient care in accordance with professional standards, core values and commitment to service excellence. The incumbent will be responsible for insuring clinic operations including clinical work, oversight and administration of all aspects of the department including research program and guidance and training for medical residents and other trainees. The physician selectee will support hiring, orientation, retention and evaluation of Physicians, Physicians Assistants & Nurse Practitioner. The selectee must be Board Certified in Psychiatry. The selected Physician will collaborate closely with the East Carolina University Department of Psychiatric Medicine and must meet the requirements for a faculty appointment at the Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

Licensure and Registration: Current, full and unrestricted licensure to practice medicine in a state, Territory, or commonwealth of the US, or in the District of Columbia.

English Language Proficiency. Physicians appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 4105(c), 4114(f), and 5010.

Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. The psychiatrist must also have satisfactorily completed a residency in psychiatry at an ACGME-accredited institution.

Board Certification: The physician must be board certified in General Psychiatry, or, if within 2 years of graduation from psychiatry residency, be board-eligible. If not yet board certified, the applicant will be required to satisfactorily complete board certification within two years of hiring.

Citizen of the United States.  Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates.

Chief Grade. Meet the requirements for Senior grade plus attainment of additional recognition in clinical, administrative or research areas. Such recognition may be demonstrated by:

(1) Certification by an American Specialty Board, or

(2) Significant accomplishments in clinical practice, educational activities, research or administration which clearly distinguish the physician as having the highest professional qualifications in the specialty area to which assigned, such as:

(a) Past or present faculty appointment at the professional level in an approved medical school, or

(b) Completion of an accredited residency in the primary specialty area or in a related area to which the individual will be assigned and unusual professional accomplishment such as:

1. Publication of articles in nationally recognized professional journals, or

2. Officer in a State or National professional medical organization, or

3. Directorship of a hospital or large clinic.

(1)  Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.

(3)  Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.
