This position is located in the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID), Division of Intramural Research (DIR), Research Technologies Branch (RTB), Research Technologies Section (RTS), at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton, Montana.

You will serve as a Visual Information Specialist providing design, training, and consultation services in communicating information through visual means to the Division of Intramural Research staff.  Your duties will include the following:

  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to translate broad concepts into details required to design, produce, reproduce, and/or display original products or materials.
  • Utilize Macintosh and PC-based software for illustration and image editing such as Canvas, SmartDraw, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe After Effects to design and produce scientific and non-scientific figures and artwork for publication in scientific journals and for public display.
  • Utilize 3D modeling software such as Maxon Cinema 4D and Adobe Master Collection to design and produce scientific and non-scientific animations for publication in scientific journals and for the web.
  • Lay out and execute finished art work using graphic systems, free-hand techniques and drawing instruments.
  • Perform a wide range of routine photography, including scientific macrophotography, architectural photography, portraits and group photos, and photos of animal necropsies and procedures to support scientific experiments and administrative purposes.

You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: assisting in the design and layout of visual materials for publication, exhibits, and/or presentations; assisting in performing photography or videography of scientific or technical subjects, analyzing problems to identify significant factors, gathering pertinent data, and recognizing solutions; planning and organizing work; and communicating effectively orally and in writing.

OR

Have completed one full year of graduate level education.

OR

Meet one of the requirements for superior academic achievement based on a) graduating within the upper third of the graduating class in a college, university, or major subdivision such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; b) having a grade point average of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; OR c) being elected for membership in a national scholastic honor society.

OR

Have a combination of post baccalaureate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
