JOB SUMMARY:

The National Endowment for the Humanities is an independent grant-making agency of the United States government dedicated to supporting research, education, preservation, and public programs in the humanities.

The Division of Education Programs seeks to improve humanities education at schools and colleges.  Through its programs devoted to teachers and their students, the division strives to cultivate intellectual curiosity, so that students can deepen their reflections on human experience; increase their understanding of different cultures and societies, past and present; and achieve the knowledge and wisdom necessary for democratic citizenship.  Under the supervision of the Director and Deputy Director, the Secretary participates in the effective day-to-day management of the Division.  The incumbent fulfills a variety of cored administrative responsibilities.

Note: This vacancy is being announced concurrently under vacancy announcement number 13-946138-MP-BL, open to current permanent Federal employees with competitive status, former Federal employees with competitive status or former Federal employees who have reinstatement eligibility, and individuals who are eligible under special appointing authorities.

  • Receives visitors to the division and answers the telephone, personally attending to many matters including answering substantive questions on the division’s grant programs. 

  • Organizes and maintains the division’s filing system.

  • Schedules meetings, conferences, and appointments as required by Director or Deputy Director.

  • Interacts with other offices and divisions of the Endowment.

  • Assists with preparation of memoranda, letters, reports, articles, and other documents in final form.

  • Coordinates travel arrangements for staff and panelists.

At the GS-07 level, Qualified candidates must possess:
3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 level.

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the line of work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, for example: experience providing administrative and clerical support; procuring supplies and equipment; preparing documents and correspondence using word processing software; responding to routine inquiries; experience using office automation tools (such as Excel, Microsoft Word, Outlook, etc.); and reviewing and routing written material.

At the GS-08 level, Qualified candidates must possess:
1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level.
