JOB SUMMARY:

The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) is one of the world's leading statistical agencies, recognized throughout the United States and around the world as a key source for the best and most comprehensive economic statistics available.  The data produced by BEA are among the most important tools used in decision-making by policy-makers in the Congress and the executive agencies, including the Council of Economic Advisers, the Federal Reserve, the Office of Management and Budget and the Treasury.  BEA's data are also used extensively by private businesses and a wide range of regional organizations, state and local governments, businesses and educational institutions.

This vacancy is for Economist positions in the Information and Business Services Branch and the Goods and Distributive Services Branch, Industry Sector Division, located at the U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of Economic Analysis in Washington, DC.
The Industry Sector Division (ISD) prepares the annual and benchmark input-output accounts and the GDP-by-Industry statistics for the U.S. jointly with the Industry Applications Division (IAD) within the Industry Economic Accounts (IEA) Directorate of BEA.  In addition, IEA produces and/or contributes to the U.S. Travel and Tourism Satellite Account (TTSA), Arts and Cultural Production Satellite Account (ACPSA) and the Healthcare Satellite Account.  Satellite Accounts are supplemental accounts that expand the analytical capacity of the main accounts by focusing on a particular aspect of economic activity.  The incumbents are economists within ISD responsible for collecting and preparing data analysis and research to support the economic statistics published as part of the Industry Economic Accounts. 
These positions are in the Information, Business Services & TTSA Branch and the Goods & Distributive Services Branch within ISD.  The Information, Business Services & TTSA Branch prepares estimates of information, finance and insurance, and professional and scientific industries for the annual and benchmark input-output accounts and the GDP-by-Industry statistics for the U.S.  The Goods and Distributive Services Branch prepares estimates of Manufacturing, Mining, Agriculture, Utilities, Retail and Wholesale industries for the annual and benchmark input-output accounts and the GDP-by-Industry statistics for the U.S.  The incumbent is responsible for preparing, analyzing and improving these statistics.

The individual selected for this position will:
*Major Duty 1:  Preparing data analysis to support the development of economic statistics for industries and the U.S. economy;
*Major Duty 2:  Developing improved estimation methods to address limitation in current estimation procedures and gaps in data coverage;
*Major Duty 3:  Interpreting and analyzing data from the national, regional and industry economic accounts and from various other sources;
*Major Duty 4:  Providing a clear and concise documents for BEA staff; assisting with technical issues related to the preparation of economic statistics; and
*Major Duty 5:  Performing individual research to improve the timeliness, relevance and accuracy of BEA’s Industry Economic Accounts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Basic Entry Requirements for All Grade or Band Levels:
A. Degree: economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
BAND LEVEL REQUIREMENTS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: In addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have specialized experience and/or directly related education in the amounts shown below.
Band II (GS-9 Level) To qualify for the band II (GS-9 level), you must meet the basic requirements listed above and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS 7 level) or band II. Examples of qualifying experience include individual economic research assignments requiring planning, information assembly, review, analyzing and evaluation, preparing reports, project coordination assignments involving a staff of professional economists, and requiring the evaluation and interpretation of economic information; communicating to a variety of audiences in person and in writing, using computer programs, various applications, data management or software packages.
OR
2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree
Band III (GS-11 Level) To qualify for the band III (GS-11 level), you meet the basic education requirements listed above and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-9 level) or band II. Examples of specialized experience include collecting economic data from primary sources; reviewing, analyzing and evaluating economic data; preparing quantitative analyses; preparing analytical reports; conducting literature searches and preparing preliminary write-ups of findings; locating and collecting relevant data to analyze a specified problem; updating databases for econometric models; designing tables and charts to illustrate analyses; and/or applying statistical analysis to data; and preparing preliminary reports; editing, communicating to a variety of audiences in person and in writing; using computer programs, various applications, data management or software packages,

A PH.D. in Economics or you must have three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a PH.D. in Economics.
