BASIC REQUIREMENTS : The basic requirements for employment as a VHA psychologist are prescribed by: Public Law 96-151 codified in Title 38,U.S.C. § 7402. To qualify for appointment, all applicants for the position of psychologist in VHA must meet the following:
A. Citizenship: Citizen of the United States.
B. Education: Have a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). The specialty area of the degree must be consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed.
Have successfully completed a professional psychology internship training program that has been accredited by APA. Exceptions : (1) new VHA psychology internship programs that are in the process of applying for APA accreditation are acceptable in fulfillment of the internship requirement, provided that such programs were sanctioned bythe VHA Central Office Program Director for Psychology and the VHA Central Office of Academic Affiliations at the time that the individual was an intern and (2) VHA facilities who offered full one-year pre-doctoral internships prior to PL 96-151 (pre-1979) are considered to be acceptable in fulfillment of the internship requirement.
Licensure: Hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (e.g., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia.
Exception. The Secretary may waive the requirement of licensure for an individual psychologist for a period not to exceed 2 years from the date of employment on the condition that such a psychologist provide care only under the supervision of a psychologist who is so licensed. Non-licensed psychologists who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements maybe given a temporary appointment as a graduate psychologist under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405 (a) (1) (D). Failure to obtain licensure during that period is justification for termination of the temporary appointment. This may result in termination of employment.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following Position Requirements:
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
1. Experience working on studies examining the associations between post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and personality disorders (PDs).
2. Trained and qualified to administer the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5(CAPS-5).
3. Proficiency in using SPSS and MPlus, statistical program to analyze datasets, to perform recommended analyses.
4. Knowledge of current research findings related to the treatment of patients diagnosed with PTSD and comorbid personality disorders.
5. Competence in the preparation, writing and publishing of manuscripts within the domain of PTSD and personality disorders. 6. Experience providing psychotherapy to veterans with PTSD and personality disorders and experience with the provision of trauma-focused therapy, including Cognitive Processing Therapy and Prolonged Exposure.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS : Mostly sedentary, requiring standing, ambulation and bending.
WORKING CONDITIONS : The work environment involves everyday risks and/or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of each place in various hospital offices. Applicants must be physically able to perform the duties of the position.The basis on which agencies may establish specific medical standards or physical requirements is discussed in 5 CFR 339. A physical condition or impairment may be disqualifying for employment only if there is a direct relationship between the condition and the nature of the duties of the specific position being filled. The work is primarily sedentary, although some physical effort may be required while walking, standing, climbing, and carrying light items such as manuals or briefcases.The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as hospitals, offices, training rooms, and libraries. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Light lifting under 15 pounds. Light carrying less than 15 pounds. Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other.
