The Cincinnati VA Medical Center is seeking One (1.0) full-time staff surgeon with Board Certification in both General Surgery and Vascular Surgery, and demonstrated expertise in the performance of endovascular procedures. The selected applicant will join an expanding Vascular Surgery group practice, providing on-site inpatient care at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center campus. Practice elements will include the full range of adult vascular surgery, including outpatient clinic care and telemedicine with VA referral sites throughout South-central Ohio. The Cincinnati VA Medical Center has a comprehensive non-invasive vascular lab, an interventional radiology and cardiac catheterization suite, and serves as the tertiary care referral center for Veteran patients in South-central Ohio, Northern Kentucky, and Southeastern Indiana.

The incumbent will be required to take in house call on a recurring basis as a member of the Acute Care Surgery team.  This activity will include on site duty during weekends and holidays.  On-call responsibilities will include first response evaluation of surgical inpatients being primarily managed by other disciplines.  Teamwork and collaboration skills are essential to the performance of this duty. Therefore, these characteristics will be important factors in the evaluation of candidates. The Acute Care Surgeon on call also provides first response Out of OR Airway Management for the facility at night and on weekends. In order to support Graduate Medical Education, applicants must be competitive for faculty appointment in the Division of Vascular Surgery at the University of Cincinnati to be considered.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

*Provide direct surgical care to inpatient and outpatients.

*Provide resident supervision and clinical instruction in the operating room, outpatient clinic and inpatient settings.

*Attend, participate and supervise residents/students in outpatient clinics and take an active role in the evaluation of the patient, decision for treatment/care, and documentation in the patient electronic records.

*Follows the VA Guidelines established for resident supervision, including those documentation requirements in the electronic patient healthcare record.

*Conduct postoperative follow-up.  Accompany the patient to the PACU or SICU assuring that the patient’s condition is optimal. If admitted, visit in-house patients within 24-48 hours following anesthesia to assess post-surgical recovery.

*Supervise residents/students in clinical instruction and the performance of any bedside procedures appropriate to their level of graduate responsibility.

*Participate in in-house on-call coverage to provide first response for the care of any surgical patient, consultation on medical inpatients or provide assistance in responding to emergency situations (i.e. code blue, rapid response).

*Maintains professional competency, courtesy and flexibility to provide the necessary services of the specialty.

*Provide regional level specialty support to VA facilities located in South-central Ohio through such means as tele-medicine and referral based consultations and treatment.

*Meet annual and mandatory training requirements that are specific to the Veterans Healthcare Administration.

 

*Staff may be assigned to committee membership to represent the surgical service or the hospital medical staff, and actively participates in carrying out assignments by that committee.

 

GRADE/STEP/SALARY

Applicant's education and experience will be reviewed by a Professional Standards Board and Compensation Panel (for physicians and dentists) in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected.  The recommended salary may be at any point in the range listed for this vacancy.

 

WORK SCHEDULE
