As a Mahematical Statistician/Survey Statistician you will:


• Serve as an expert advisor and consultant on analytical and methodological issues and concerns, advising the Division of Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys and NCHS leadership on complex issues involved in collecting, producing, and analyzing health and nutrition examination statistics, which provide data and information critical to formulating national policies and program initiatives. 
• Develop, test and evaluate analytical systems and processes; conduct and coordinate scientific peer review of manuscripts involving data collected in the Division's data collection programs; develops and monitors quality control programs for the data collection program; and conducts and participates in research programs on data collection methodology, survey methodology, data quality, computer technology, statistical computation, and health and nutrition status, and participates in the interpretation of survey results.
• Conceive, design, plan and carry out sophisticated research projects involving the use of modeling and other mathematical techniques for the analysis of statistical data.
• Collaborate with researcher in external organizations and in academia engaged in parallel research efforts, to compare findings, and to maximize the effective use of research resources.

Basic Qualification Requirements for Mathematical Statistician, GS-1529-14

Must have successfully completed a full four-year course of study at an accredited college or university that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics.


Have a combination of education and experience -- at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Basic Qualification Requirements for Survey Statistician, GS-1530-14

Have at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. 


Have a combination of education and experience -- courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.

In addition to meeting the basic qualifications applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience developing, testing and evaluating survey and analytical systems; and performing data analysis of health and nutrition statistics.  

Foreign Education: If you are using education completed in a foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specialized in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at the U.S. accredited college or university.
