This is an Air Reserve Technician Enlisted position.

Air Reserve Technicians are part of the regular civil service and enjoy all the benefits granted to Federal employees in the competitive civil service.  In addition, ARTs are required to maintain active membership in an Air Force Reserve unit so long as they occupy Air Reserve Technician positions. As members of reserve units, ARTs receive on average one weekend of military training per month. In addition, they are eligible for 15 days active duty tour each year for which military leave is granted with full civilian pay. Air Reserve units and members are subject to immediate call to active duty in mobilization to meet a national emergency.




Retired military are usually ineligible for membership in the Air Force Reserve. Retired military personnel who have active Air Force Reserve assignments may apply provided they show assignment (position and unit) on their application.

The primary purpose of this Air Reserve Technician (ART) Enlisted position is to serve as Chief, Career Development in administering all aspects of the Career Development Section.  Incumbent of this position will perform the following duties:


  • Plan, direct and control all aspects of the Career Development function for both Active Guard Reserve (AGR) and unit reservists. 
  • Provide human resources management (military) advisory services to commanders and supervisors on all Career Development programs.
  • Coordinate and ensure programs are managed in compliance with applicable directives through periodic self-inspection.
  • Administer actions in Automated Reserve Orders Writing System-Reserves (AROWS-R).
  • Conduct staff assistance visits and train personnel (ARTS, AGRs, traditional reservists, civilian employees, etc., for programs  they are responsible for.
  • Provide technical guidance and assistance.
  • Ensure accuracy of Personnel Data System (PDS) and perform functional review of data reliability.
  • May be required to perform Installation Personnel Readiness duties and/or assist as directed.

You must have at least one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or qualifying pay band or other pay systems in the Federal service which has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of this position.  Typically we would find this work experience within a military personnel function, performing duties related to career development.  (To be creditable, specialized experience must meet the above quality level requirements).

Substitution of Education for Experience: Master's Degree or equivalent graduate degree or two (2) full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or OR  LL.B or J.D., in a relevant field of study (e.g., Business Administration, Public Administration, Human Resources, or Organization Management). This education demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of a Human Resources Specialist and is related to the duties of this position. Position may or will require incumbent to: (1) Fly in military and/or commercial aircraft in the performance of temporary duty (TDY) assignments. (2) Incumbent is required to meet and maintain Air Force Reserve requirements. (3) Incumbent's regular assignments are primarily ART duties: however, the incumbent may be assigned some non-ART duties, generally not to exceed 30 percent of total responsibilities. (4) Obtain and retain applicable security clearance. (5) This is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). Incumbent will subject to pre-employment and random Drug Testing as a condition of employment. (6) May be required to work an uncommon tour of duty. (7) The work is primarily sedentary, although some physical effort or exertion may be required in the performance of duties.
