VA San Diego’s Primary Care program is on the cutting edge of clinical care, teaching and scholarship, affiliated with the UC San Diego School of Medicine. Recent innovations have focused on the implementation of the patient-centered medical home (known as Patient-Aligned Care Teams, or PACT, within VHA), to assure that veterans receive patient-centered care delivered by an engaged, collaborative, multidisciplinary team comprised of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, clerical staff, pharmacists, social workers, psychologists and nutritionists. The VA San Diego Healthcare System is seeking a Primary Care Physician for our Primary Care Community Outpatient Clinic located in Mission Valley. License is required in any state. Incumbent should be Board Certified/Board Eligible in Internal Medicine or Family Practice and must meet requirements to obtain and maintain academic appointment.


Physician will be part of a healthcare team consisting of Physician, Registered Nurse, LVN, Pharmacist, Social Worker, and clerical staff providing primary care services, stressing health maintenance and preventative medicine. Serves veterans in San Diego and Imperial Counties. Refers for speciality services to the VA Hospital services for over 45,000 Veteran patients.

WORK SCHEDULE:  Full-time, 40 hours per week.  Overtime may be required as needed for patient care.

1. Citizenship. Citizen of the United States.

2. Education. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.

3. Licensure and Registration. Physicians (Except Residents). Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.

4. First-Year Residency (Internship). Completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.

5. English Language Proficiency. Physicians, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).

6. Board Certification/Eligibility. Board Certification/Eligibility in Internal Medicine or Family Practice.

7. Academic Appointment. Ability to obtain and maintain academic appointment with our affiliate university, University of California San Diego (USCD).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Physician: The physical requirements of this position include the following tasks which may be performed intermittently: Moderate Lifting (10-44lbs); Moderate Carrying (10-44lbs); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Bending/stooping; Twisting; Both hands required; Walking (up to 6hours); Standing (up to 2 hours); Both legs required; Near vision correctable at 13” to 16” to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40/ in the other; Both eyes required; Hearing aid permitted; Mental and Emotional Stability required.
