As a Mathematical Statistician your duties may include the following:

 

  • Directing and applying statistical methods for the analysis of data;
  • Verifying and validating methods and computations in studies or surveys to verify accuracy;
  • Developing new or revised statistical methods or techniques for use in studies;
  • Providing technical guidance to scientists, researchers and other professionals in the interpretation and use of statistical analysis and;
  • Contributing to the development of briefings, reports or summaries on survey results for publication

In order to qualify for this position, you must possess one of the following criteria listed to fulfill the Basic Requirement.  Transcripts must be submitted to verify educational claims.  Failure to submit documentation may result in an ineligible rating:

 

A.  A Bachelor's or higher degree that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics. (Courses acceptable toward meeting the mathematics course requirement must have included at least four of the following: differential calculus, integral calculus, advanced calculus, theory of equations, vector analysis, advanced algebra, linear algebra, mathematical logic, differential equations, or any other advanced course in mathematics for which one of these was a prerequisite. Courses in mathematical statistics or probability theory with a prerequisite of elementary calculus or more advanced courses will be accepted toward meeting the mathematics requirements, with the provision that the same course cannot be counted toward both the mathematics and the statistics requirement.) - OR-

B.  A combination of education and experience -- at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience offered in combination with educational courses to meet the requirements should include evidence of statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying known statistical techniques to data such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.

 

AND, you must possess the following specialized experience to fulfill the Minimum Qualifications Requirement: One year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal service, analyzing complex statistical data (e.g. multi-variate) using standard or established methods; assisting in the development of new or revised statistical techniques to resolve research problems; drafting reports or papers on the technical or statistical aspects of a research project or survey; and providing advice and guidance to research staff on the use of statistical techniques.
