TOUR OF DUTY: 3:30p.m. - Midnight (Will rotate weekends and holidays)

NOTE: The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate’s education and experience and recommend the grade and step at which the candidate will be placed.  The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

The VA Palo Alto Health Care System has an immediate opening for Inpatient Pharmacy Technician to work the Evening Shift at the Palo Alto Division.  The technician rotates through various assignments (such as IV room, unit dose processing, robot cassette fill) and shifts, as indicated by the supervisor.  Responsibilities include:

Unit dose: assignment involves filling and delivering new medication orders, restocking ward stock medications, AcuDose, PacMed, and Robot Rx machines, repackaging bulk items into specific quantities, filling OR/Anesthesia carts, replenishing crash carts, and performing monthly medication inspections of all wards/clinics.

Robot Cassette fill: assignment involves filling inpatient unit-dose cassettes by utilizing the Robot RX and med Carousel automated systems for filling required doses.  The includes ensuring that the patient cassette is complete and performing the cassette exchange on a daily basis.

IV room: assignment involves preparing IV admixtures, piggybacks, and chemotherapy products using sterile techniques in the laminar flow hood, in accordance with USP 797 requirements.  This includes performing all necessary pharmaceutical calculations, selecting appropriate products, completing necessary administrative procedures, and delivering medications.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  

  • U.S. citizenship.  
  • Certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).  NOTE: You must provide a copy of the PTCB certificate with the application package.
  • English Language Proficiency

GRADE DETERMINATIONS: One year experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.  Experience may have been gained in hospital pharmacies.  Experience must have provided a basic knowledge of pharmaceutical nomenclature, characteristics, strengths, and dosage forms of pharmaceuticals; pharmaceutical systems of weights and measures; and the variety of procedures and techniques involved in the care, storage, repackaging bulk compounding, and distribution of pharmaceuticals.  NOTE: Education, training, internships and externships are NOT creditable as experience for this grade level.

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and other Characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

1. Ability to perform technical functions of compounding IV medications in accordance with USP 797.

2. Ability to perform technical functions in a unit dose distribution system.

3. Ability to perform technical duties associated with handling controlled substances.

4. Ability to ensure adequate medication on stock to provide patient care.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The functional requirements for this position are: moderate lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds); pushing (2 hours); reaching above shoulders; use of fingers, and both hands and legs required; walking and standing (6-8 hours); repeated bending (2 hours); ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors; and hearing (aid permitted).  The environmental factors for this position are: constant noise; working around machinery with moving parts; working closely with others and/or alone; protracted or irregular hours; unusual emotional strain; and working with hazardous pharmaceuticals.
