This position is located in the Joint Forces Headquarters—State, Logistics Directorate (J-4), Surface Maintenance Facility.  The purpose of this position is to perform limited diagnosis, routine repairs, and maintenance on combat, tactical, commercial, and special purpose vehicles and equipment.  May assist higher graded mechanics in the performance of maintenance duties.
EXCEPTED POSITION:

*INDEFINITE APPOINTMENT:  THIS POSITION WILL BE FILLED AS AN INDEFINITE APPOINTMENT FOR AN UNSPECIFIED PERIOD OF TIME.  THE INCUMBENT MAY BE TERMINATED UPON RECEIVING A 30 DAY NOTICE.   SHOULD THIS POSITION BECOME PERMANENT, THE INDIVIDUAL MAY BE CONVERTED TO PERMANENT STATUS WITHOUT FURTHER COMPETITION (AND UPON RECOMMENDATION OF SUPERVISOR AND APPROVING AUTHORITY).

ALABAMA ARMY NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED: This is an excepted position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the Alabama Army National Guard. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Acceptance of an excepted position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment. Applicants who are not currently a member of the Alabama Army National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the Alabama Army National Guard in the military grade listed in this announcement.
AREA OF CONSIDERATION FOR THIS ALABAMA ARMY NATIONAL GUARD POSITION:
AREA ONE:
All permanent Alabama Army National Guard civilian excepted technicians currently employed.
AREA TWO: All Drill Status/M-Day members of the Alabama Army National Guard.
AREA THREE: All U.S. citizens eligible for membership in the Alabama Army National Guard.
(1) Performs limited diagnosis, routine repairs and maintenance on heavy-duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical and automotive vehicles.  Assists higher graded mechanics in the repair and/or overhaul of major systems to include internal combustion engines, turbine engines, automatic and non-automatic transmissions, heavy duty drive line systems, and hydraulic utility systems and controls. 
(2) Performs limited diagnoses to determine the cause of mechanical failures by means of visual and auditory checks and/or uses basic test equipment such as compression testers, voltmeters, ohmmeters and pressure gauges.  Determines when parts should be cleaned, adjusted or replaced with standard parts to complete work orders.
(3) Removes, replaces, adjusts, cleans and installs parts and components such as wheel seals, switches, sensors, fuel pumps, water pumps, power steering pumps, brakes, filters, radiators, bearings, springs, shock absorbers, wheel cylinders, starter motors, mufflers, battery cables, and other items of similar complexity.
(4) Independently performs routine repairs and maintenance functions in remote locations that can be accomplished by removing, cleaning, reinstalling, or replacing defective parts of components and systems using standard parts.  Receives guidance and instruction from a higher graded mechanic or supervisor to perform non-routine and more complex repairs on portions of major assemblies and/or systems. 
(5) Conducts limited readiness and repair inspections on vehicles and associated equipment supported by the activity.  Performs Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services (PMCS) and ensures vehicles and equipment are properly serviced, including brake adjustments, replacing hydraulic fluids, greasing, cleaning, etc.
(6) May perform routine maintenance and limited repairs on basic communication equipment such as radios, field telephones, amplifiers, switchboards, recorders, intercoms by removing and replacing components and elements.  Performs minor body and fender, or other metal repairs, using peening hammers, dollies and limited welding.
(7) In conjunction with or in the absence of the Tools and Parts Attendant, may maintain supply documentation, and the receipt, store, issue, and inventory of tools and parts used in the trades operation. 
(8) Performs other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Each applicant must fully substantiate (in his/her own words) that he/she meets the requirements of the specialized experience listed below; Otherwise, the applicant will be considered unqualified for this position. GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Experience or training which demonstrates knowledge of equipment to be able to do routine jobs, simple preventative maintenance tasks, and is able to use common tools and equipment in the line of work.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must possess at least 12 months experience or training using common hand and power tools and a small variety of test and measurement devices to make mechanical repairs.  Experience removing, adjusting, replacing, cleaning, and installing a variety of parts, components, and accessories.  Experience which demonstrates a basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic theory applying to vehicles; and skill to replace, fit, install, and make adjustments.  Experience demonstrating an understanding of the makeup and operation of the various individual systems maintained and their interrelationships.  Experience reading and interpreting parts lists, manufactures’ repair manuals, diagrams, and electrical schematics.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

1. Basic knowledge and understanding of the mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of individual systems, and their interrelationships for a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, automotive, special purpose vehicles and equipment.

2. Working knowledge of various techniques for removing, adjusting, replacing, cleaning, and installing parts and components of combat, tactical, commercial, automotive, special purpose vehicles and equipment.

3. Basic understanding of electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, and other non-mechanical system theories; and skill to replace, fit, install, and adjust systems.
4. Skill to use basic test equipment and ability to analyze test results to determine fault for repair or replacement of improperly functioning parts or components.  Ability to use basic tools common to the occupation.

5. Ability to determine when parts should be cleaned, reinstalled, or replaced with standard parts.

6. Ability to read and interpret parts list, manufacturer’s repair manuals, technical manuals, diagrams, engineering drawings, and schematics.


SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE IS NOT CONSIDERED FOR WAGE GRADE POSITIONS.

COMPATIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: All applications will be considered regardless of MOS. Incumbent will be required to be assigned to and qualify in a compatible military position. The selected individual may be required to attend formal technical school training in a military status.
