The incumbent will:

  • Assist in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of technical duties in a laboratory or field environment.
  • Keep detailed records of experimental data.
  • Perform routine and recurring techniques and studies using a variety of specialized equipment.
  • Utilize computers and software packages to tabulate, statistically analyze, and summarize data.
  • Collect, prepare, evaluate, and verify samples and supporting records.
  • Maintain sample records and locate and compile pertinent information from various sources to include in the records.
  • Maintain an inventory of chemicals for research and experiments.

Minimum Qualifications

GS-05:

Specialized Experience: One full-time year (12-months) of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service performing the following duties under close supervision: assisting in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of technical duties in a laboratory or field environment; modifying techniques and procedures to satisfy the needs of research projects; maintaining, calibrating, and modifying equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures; utilizing computers and software packages to tabulate, statistically analyze, and summarize data; preparing solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory or field; and safely disposing of biological and chemical waste materials.

-OR-

Education: Four full years of education leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, microbiology, chemistry, statistics, physics, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled.

Combination: A combination of the specialized experience and education as described above, such that the percentage of required experience plus the percentage of education equals 100%.

GS-06:

Specialized Experience: One full-time year (12-months) of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service performing the following duties under supervision: assisting in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of technical duties in a laboratory or field environment; modifying or developing techniques and procedures to satisfy the needs of research projects; maintaining, calibrating, and modifying equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures; utilizing computers and software packages to tabulate, statistically analyze, and summarize data; preparing solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory or field; and safely disposing of biological and chemical waste materials.

Education: One full semester (9 semester hours) of graduate education in biology, microbiology, chemistry, statistics, physics, mathematics, or a field directly related to the duties of this position.

Combination: A combination of the specialized experience and education as described above, such that the percentage of required experience plus the percentage of education equals 100%.


Time-in-grade restrictions apply for all candidates considered under merit promotion procedures: One year or 52-weeks at the GS-04 level is required for the GS-05. One year or 52-weeks at the GS-05 level is required for the GS-06. (MUST SUBMIT AN SF-50 THAT SHOWS TIME-IN-GRADE ELIGIBILITY AS SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION)
