JOB SUMMARY:

A career with the Forest Service will challenge you to manage and care for more than 193 million acres of our nation's most magnificent lands, conduct research through a network of forest and range experiment stations and the Forest Products Laboratory, and provide assistance to State and private forestry agencies.

Serves as a clerical assistant to the unit's Property Management Officer (PMO) and provides detailed assistance for acquisition, utilization, protection, and disposition of federally-owned personal property for the intermediate and field offices serviced. The work includes performance of limited phases of property management, maintenance of property records through an automated supply database, and the processing of property documents for acquisitions or disposal of property.

This position is located in Region 2, White River National Forest, Administration & Lands Group, Glenwood Springs, CO.

TEMPORARY APPOINTMENT: Some positions will have varying work schedules. Some positions may have irregular and protracted hours of work. Tours of duty include full-time or less than full-time and will involve working weekends or irregular work hours. Considerable travel may be required. Some positions involve work that requires travel away from the official duty location to remote worksites within commuting distance (49 miles).

Positions will be filled as a temporary appointment up to 6 months.

The USDA Forest Service has legislative authority to recruit and fill Permanent (Career/Career-Conditional), Temporary, and Term Appointments under the USDA Demonstration Project. Under this authority, any U.S. citizen may apply.

Ensures adherence to established standards for property acquisition, utilization, accountability, and disposal.

Maintains the personal property inventory system of records. Receives source documents (hard copy or electronic) concerning personal property acquisition, transfer, or disposal action.

Performs routine phases of property management; e.g., conducts limited studies on the utilization of property and makes informal recommendations based on findings.

Locates surplus property, determines age and probable condition by checking records, contacting local vendors, and making physical inspection.

Completes data entry screens or audits screens prepared by subunits for accuracy and completeness before electronic transmittal to the National Finance Center (NFC.) Periodically reviews the automated system reports generated by the NFC for items that have been received but not yet entered into the PMIS/PROP database.

Takes corrective action to minimize the length of reports. Using the on-line PROP system, maintains the currency of the tables of Property Management Officers, Accountable Property Officers, and Custodians so that all accountable property is properly assigned to responsible personnel.

Using the on-line PROP system, orders recurring "canned" reports and electronically log files for retrieval and local printing. Uses the remote batch process (CAS) to activate the FOCUS report writer program in order to obtain unique reports or specialized information from NFC.

Compiles information and prepares reports.

Prepares reconciliation reports upon receipt of authorizing documentation for biannual and special inventories of personal accountable property.

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements.

GS-05: One year of specialized experience equal to the GS-04. Specialized experience is defined as one or more of the following: processed accurate information regarding the acquisition, disposal, or loss of personal property by completing or reviewing documentation, obtaining additional information from the user group or suppliers, and maintaining records through the database; Verified automated transmissions to ensure that all records are accepted; Prepared or reviews reports for lost, damaged, or destroyed property. Obtained data needed to complete disposal process and updates electronic records; Ensured adherence to established standards for property acquisition, utilization, accountability, and disposal; Prepared reconciliation reports upon receipt of authorizing documentation for biannual and special inventories of personal accountable property.- OR

Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in any field of study. -OR

Combination of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester hours) and experience..
