This position is located within Nutrition and Food Service at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System; assignments may require working at both the Little Rock and North Little Rock campuses. The individual selected for this position will be expected to set up an assigned station on a tray assembly line or cafeteria line with all needed food items according to menu, special orders and supply items. The following list (not all-inclusive) is an example of some of the major duties and responsibilities:

  • Check food items before and during meal service for proper temperature;
  • Record temperatures and take corrective action when food temperature is unacceptable;
  • Help patients at bedside with routine meal service needs such as tray set-up;
  • Read the menu and diet cards or tray tickets to determine correct food items to place on patient trays;
  • Identify obvious discrepancies between the Regular and Modified diets and food items on the menu or special order;
  • Serve trays to the patients bedside or dining room in a polite and attentive manner;
  • Serve cold and hot food items attractively, neatly, and in correct portions;
  • Communicate with staff on the Nursing Unit or Emergency Department on unexpected or difficult diet changes;
  • Keep equipment clean and report any needed repairs promptly to a supervisor;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Rotating work schedule: Employees rotate off days every 3 months. Examples of available tours are: 5:30 am-2:00 pm; 6:00 am-2:30 pm; 11:00 am-7:30 pm; 7:00 am-3:30 pm; 10:00 am-6:30 pm; 11:30 am-8:00 pm

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C (www.opm.gov/qualifications/x-118c).  For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1).  Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements.   While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.

You will be rated on the following Job Elements as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: (Narrative responses are not required.)

  • Reliability and dependability (Screen-Out).
  • Knowledge of special procedures in preparing food and serving patients.
  • Ability to read and understand menus and tray tickets when working on tray assembly line.
  • Knowledge of measurements and serving information for regular and modified menus.
  • Knowledge of sanitation principles.

Physical effort and work conditions: The individual selected for this position performs work requiring continuous standing, walking and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling and bending. Frequently the employee lifts or moves objects weighing up to 30 pounds unassisted, and occasionally lifts or moves objects weighing over 40 pounds with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers. The work is performed in a large food service area or commissary kitchen which is well lighted, but often hot and noisy. The selectee is subject to noise, slippery floors, and extreme hot and/or cold temperatures and can be subject to minor cuts, burns and bruises.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

Applicants will be ranked based on three quality groups, as follows:

  • Best Qualified - applicants possessing knowledge, skills and abilities that substantially exceed the minimum qualifications of the position and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position;
  • Well Qualified - applicants possessing knowledge, skills and abilities that exceed the minimum qualification of the position and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job;
  • Qualified - applicants possessing knowledge, skills and abilities that meet the minimum qualifications of the position.
