This position is in the Mental Health (1A) section of the Nursing Service at the VHSO in Fayetteville, AR.

 

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

1.  Bathing, personal hygiene, removal of waste products and assisting ambulation

 

2.  Observes patients who may be confused or have other cognitive issues 

 

3.  Initiates emergency action in life threatening situations

 

4.  Document vital signs and activities of daily living

 

5.  Monitoring the camera system

 

TOUR OF DUTY: Night shift with rotating weekends and holidays

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: 
Citizenship:  Must be a citizen of the United States.
Physical Standards:  Applicants must successfully complete a pre-employment physical, including the possibility of a drug screen.
English Language Proficiency:  Proficiency in the English Language is required for direct patient care positions. (P.L. 95-201) 


GRADE REQUIREMENTS:

 

GS-05 EXPERIENCE AND/OR EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of specialized experience equipped with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position Nursing Assistant. To be creditable this experience must have been equivalent to the GS-4 level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include: nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aid, performing duties such as nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aid. (1) providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care, (2) support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus, (3) caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement, (4) assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.

OR

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE:  Successful completion of a 4-year post high school degree program in an accredited community college, junior college, college or university in practical nursing or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position. OR

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience to meet the total experience requirements to qualify at the GS-05 level. (Transcripts Required)
Background Investigation:
 A background security investigation will be required for all new hires.  Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication.  Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

You will be rated on the following KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position.
1. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology in order to observe and report significant physiological and/or psychological changes in the patient’s condition, appropriately informing the nurse about progress, needs, request, and/or complaints.
2. Knowledge and skill to recognize and/or initiate basic life support for the patient in cardiac and/or respiratory arrest.
3. Knowledge and skill sufficient to use written nursing procedures and policies, operate equipment, and utilize supplies to provide nursing care for assigned patients.
4. Ability to use initiative in carrying out recurring tasks independently without specific instructions, but appropriately referring problems or deviations not covered by instruction to the professional nurse.
5. Ability to successfully communicate to co-workers and other medical center personnel; clearly and concisely in matters of patient care, in a professional, diplomatic manner.
