JOB SUMMARY:

The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal and Urban operated facilities and programs.

The purpose of this position is to respond to inquiries from patients, their authorized representative, and other third parties, to review medical documentation for completeness, and to file medical records from an outpatient clinic. The position is located in the service unit's Health Information Management (HIM) department and reports to the HIM Supervisor.

  • Assist patients and medical providers in obtaining  and releasing of patient chart notes
  • Serve as medical records custodian
  • Assist in patient care customer related services such as preparing patient charts
  • Communicates with the Service Unit Health Record Administrator

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

For GS-04:

To qualify for the GS-04 level, you must show evidence on your resume of at least one full year of general type of experience at or equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-03). This type of experience is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled.

For GS-05:

To qualify for the GS-05 level, you must show evidence on your resume of at least one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-04). Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Your work experience must show demonstrated knowledge of medical records procedures, methods, and requirements sufficient to perform the full range of medical records duties and release of information; Some medical terminology is needed to be able to abstract data from medical records.

EDUCATION in LIEU of EXPERIENCE:

For the GS-04 grade level, 2 years above high school

For the GS-05 grade level, 4 years above high school.

Combining Education with Experience: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements for this position.

Additional Information on Education: Successfully completed education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite is creditable at grades GS-3 through GS-5 for this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school.

PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS: In addition to meeting experience or education requirements, applicants for these positions must show possession of the following skills, as appropriate. Applicants may meet these requirements by passing the appropriate performance test, presenting a certificate of proficiency from a school or other organization authorized to issue such certificates by the Office of Personnel Management local office, or by self-certifying their proficiency.

40 words per minute typing speed Words per minute are based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.

Indian Preference applicants will be rated in accordance with the Indian Health Service Excepted Service Qualification (Preston) Standards. Time-In-Grade requirements, if applicable, will not apply to Excepted Service Examining Plan.
