JOB SUMMARY:

This position is located at the Unity Healing Center, in Cherokee, North Carolina. Unity is a Federal facility that provides multi-disciplinary, multi-modal (12 step, adventure based, traditional therapy oriented) programs for Native American adolescents. You will provide supervision to residents throughout various shifts, assuring residents are safe, escorted throughout the facility, and cared for by treatment activities.

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENT - In accordance with the IHS Employee Immunization policy, selectee will be required to be immunized against measles and rubella by providing documentation/proof of immunity to measles and rubella prior to entrance on duty. Exceptions are persons born before 1957 who are not required to take the measles vaccine or provide proof of immunity. Special consideration may be allowed to individuals who are allergic to a component of vaccine or have a history of severe reaction to a vaccine or who are currently pregnant. This applies to candidates for positions in any Service Unit or any Area Office position which requires regular work at a Service Unit.

DUTIES:

  • Escorts and provides supervision to residents at meals and other scheduled events.
  • Transports residents to treatment activities.
  • Assists clinical and program staff in providing treatment programs and therapeutic/lesson plans.
  • Supervises residents during program components, including recreation, education, group, cultural awareness, meditation/reflections, chemical dependency assignments, homework, and similar activities.
  • Conducts safety checks, admission, and discharge of UHC residents.
  • Manages resident behavioral and emotional problems and crises, including intervening in aggressive and suicidal behavior.

GS-05:  To qualify for this position you must meet A, B, or C as specified below.

A) At least one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service, that included: assisting professional staff working with individuals with drug and alcohol addictions; assisting staff in work of a social services nature involving community organizations and voluntary activities; assisting in the monitoring of a boarding school or residential facility; serving as counselor in a youth summer camp; or completing work duties that demonstrated the ability to be responsible for, lead, and train members of a job crew.

B) 4-years of education beyond high school leading to a bachelor's degree that (a) included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of subjects directly related to the work of the position; (b) included a major in social behavior, human behavior, or healthcare or (c) was supplemented by specialized experience as described above for the  GS-04 grade level.

or

C) A percentage of the education described in statement B above (only education in excess of 60 semester hours leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable) AND a percentage of the specialized experience that is less than a year described in statement A, that when combined equal 100%.
