The Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center is a 673-bed tertiary healthcare facility which provides care to over 100,000 veterans in northern Ohio. The Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center is recruiting for multiple Nursing Assistants. The Nursing Assistant will function in the Community Living Center within Nursing Service. The Nursing Assistant is under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and performs self-directed functions as a skilled member of the nursing care team. The Nursing Assistant duties include:

  • Encouraging patients to maintain self-care and assisting patients with personal hygiene.
  • Participating in the admission, transferring, and discharging of patients such as collecting patient information, orienting the unit, and preparing patient physically and emotionally for transfer or discharge.
  • Taking vital signs and specimens, observing and recording neurological signs, and supporting the physician and nurse in other procedures and tests.
  • Participating in patient care planning with the professional nurse by suggesting nursing actions based on information obtained from group meetings or interacting with the patient.
  • Working with patients using a variety of treatment procedures in groups to explore their behavior and feelings for the purpose of establishing more acceptable approaches to daily living.
  • Supervising patients on special watch and reports and records behaviors.
  • Charting patient's physical and emotional progress.
  • Maintaining a safe and secure environment for patients.

Work Schedule: Day and night shift with rotating weekends and holiday coverage to meet staffing needs.

To qualify at the GS-5 level you must possess one of the following:

Experience: Possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 grade level in the Federal service. Qualifying specialized experience includes nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aid performing duties such as providing personal nursing care such as providing pre and post-operative care and caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement.

OR

Education: Completed a four year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation.

OR

Combination of Experience and Education: Possess a combination of education and experience to qualify at the GS-5 level. This will be computed by first determining your total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determining your education as a percentage of the education that meets the requirements for GS-5. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-5. For example an applicant has eight months of GS-4 level specialized experience and 80 semester hours of college. The applicant meets 67 percent of the required experience and 33 percent of the required education (i.e., 20 semester hours in excess of the first 60 semester hours). The applicant meets 100 percent of the total requirements and is qualified for the position. At least eight of the 20 semester hours must be directly related to the work of the position.
