Applicants must meet the following typing proficiency:
40 words per minute based on a five minute sample with three or fewer errors.
In addition to meeting the typing proficiency, applicants must possess ONE of the following:
GS-4: One year of progressively responsible clerical, or office work.
Two years of education above the high school level.
GS-5: One year of specialized experience determining eligibility requirements, obtaining and processing demographic and insurance information for patient registration, alternate resources, contract health services or related purposes.
Four years of education above high school.
This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school.
Combining Education and Experience: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements at grade GS-5.
For GS-5 level positions only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experice.
Foreign Education: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program.
