This position is in the Community Care Service located at the Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. These are street level outreach positions that accompany professional staff into the community to talk with homeless veterans.  Position duties and assignments are as follows but not limited to

·         Accompanies professional staff out in the community contacting homeless veterans and veterans service organizations

·         Assist veterans in gaining access to various GLA programs and services

·         Utilizes effective communication skills to deal with people of varying socioeconomic and educational backgrounds

·         Assist special needs populations such as homeless and mentally ill obtain housing, benefits, training and employment opportunities.

·         Conducts oral presentations to individuals and groups on various GLA programs and services

·         Prepares reports and presentations of statistics, position challenges, accomplishments

·         Conducts brief interviews with persons to obtain facts, and relevant information

·         Utilizes government vehicles for local travel

Work Schedule: 6am-6pm Individuals will work various shifts during these hours

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement

Time-in-grade:  Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS-5 grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.


Specialized Experience:Applicants must have One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-5) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:  involves meeting and working with individuals or families in the community, or with community agencies, requiring an ability to establish and maintain community contacts, positive work relationships and to perform related office support duties; communicating and working effectively with individual members of the particular population group served, homeless; participates in the day-to-day activities for the homeless group in maintaining order, referral directories reporting of discipline issues, and safety giving practical advice and warnings to individuals on everyday problems of adjustment to issues related to the homeless Veteran group; positions which involve work that is in direct support of professional counselors or other specialists who counsel the homeless and unemployed; making contacts in the community to obtain cooperation from the Veteran and with the program; contacts those individuals in the community that the program is intended to serve, homeless Veterans, and advising them regarding the services and requirements for participation; maintaining the necessary records, case files, and occupational and maintains directories of referral information, and similar office work


 Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-5 level.

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of subjects directly related to the work of the position; included a major in social behavior,ie  Social Sciences, Sociology, human behavior, Psychology or health care or; Health  Administration

Physical Requirements: Regular work involves walking talking to homeless veterans out in the community along with a professional staff member driving an automobile. The work may require carrying a clipboard, or program brochures and forms. Clerical work involves handling file and documents in an office setting.
