JOB SUMMARY:

The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). This is a full-time permanent Utility Systems Repairer-Operator position located in the Maintenance Department at the Claremore Indian Hospital.  The incumbent is under the direct supervision of the Utility Systems Repairer-Operator Supervisor.  The primary function of this position is to operate, maintain, and repair major equipment/utility systems and related equipment required to provide building and utility services and environmental control for all buildings at the Claremore Service Unit.  The incumbent will also perform carpentry services for renovation/construction projects and preventative maintenance for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other building features.

  • Maintain, operate and repair all utility systems (such as chillers, cooling tower, pumps, air handlers, steam boilers, domestic hot water and chilling loop, HVAC, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems), and related auxiliary equipment.
  • Maintain surveillance of the computerized heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system control.
  • Perform repairs, renovations and construction projects to hospital and other buildings on-site, and maintains building features.
  • Perform scheduled preventive and emergency maintenance on utility systems, building components, and other mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

WG-8: Must be able to perform the duties listed below as well as perform maintenance mechanic duties, including use and application of standard limited building techniques and practices.

WG-9: Must be able to perform the duties listed below as well as perform maintenance mechanic duties, including use and application of standard building techniques, practices, codes, and limited understanding of blueprints, sketches and schematics.

WG-10: Must be able to perform the duties listed below as well as perform maintenance mechanic duties, including use and application of standard building techniques, practices, codes, reading and understanding of blueprints, sketches and schematics. 

 

Duties: Follow simple oral or written instructions and/or work order; Read and understand work orders in order to complete assigned work; Use and maintain pneumatic hand tools; Use and maintain shop tools, drill press, band saw, table saw, etc.; Follow manufacturer's instructions for use of power tools; Follow safety manuals on operation of tools and equipment; Follow safety guidelines working with oils and lubricants; Working with inert gases and solvents, acids, adhesives, sealants, paints, oils and lubricants while performing maintenance tasks; Respond to frequent changes in instructions, with respect to the team, project, and/or task; Adhere to a schedule to perform preventive maintenance work and inspection, and maintain complete records of work completed; Use and maintain a variety of electrical, carpentry, painting and plumbing equipment (hand and motorized).

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Physical Requirements:

  • Light to medium physical effort is required in observing equipment and adjusting controls.
  • The work may require continual standing and walking, some squatting, bending, climbing ladders, reaching above the head, and lifting up to 80 lbs.
  • Occasionally works in awkward and cramped conditions when making repairs. 

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in the Facilities Management Service and also in mechanical rooms, sometimes outside, occasionally in inclement weather. 
  • Employee is exposed to the possibility of boiler bursts and steam blowback, toxic gases refrigerants, fumes, and scalds. Subject to cuts, bruises, electrical shock, chemical irritations and broken bones while working around machinery and equipment. 
  • Noise level is often high and ear protection is required. Other protective devices such as goggles, respirators, steel-toe shoes, gloves, hardhats, etc., while in performance of specific duties such as water testing, handling chemicals and refrigerants, etc., will be worn as required, in accordance with OSHA regulations.
