This position is located in the Department of Ophthalmology, Directorate for Surgical Services, Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD).  The Ophthalmology Department is responsible for rendering highly specialized services to complex patient populations including active duty military and eligible beneficiaries.  The incumbent will work directly under the supervision of the Assistant Department Head with the primary responsibility of evaluation and follow-up care of patients referred to the department.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • You must be a US Citizen.

  • Suitable for Federal employment as determined by background investigation.
  • This position is a drug-testing designated position (TDP).
  • You must obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.

·         Provides evaluation and follow-up care of surgical patients referred to the department.

·         Performs minor surgical procedures.

·         Provides preoperative and postoperative care, working closely with staff physicians of various subspecialties.

·         Collaborates as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team participating in the clinical decision-making process.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: All applicants must meet the following basic requirements:

 

Graduation from a physician assistant educational program, accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessors, at a college, university, or educational institution that is accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the Secretary, U.S. Department of Education;

 

AND

 

Successful completion of the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) examination; must maintain status as a certified physician assistant, including completion of all requirements for continuing medical education (CME) and re-certification.

 

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:   In order to qualify for this position, your résumé must provide sufficient experience and/or education, knowledge, skills, and abilities, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are being considered.   Your résumé is the key means we have for evaluating your skills, knowledge, and abilities, as they relate to this position. Therefore, we encourage you to be clear and specific when describing your experience.

 

Your résumé  must demonstrate a minimum of one full year of work experience as a certified physician assistant at or equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector and completion of an accredited physician assistant educational program. Work experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to successfully perform the duties of the position. Work experience must demonstrate the following:

 

    • Experience with ophthalmic pathophysiology, ophthalmic surgical indications, risks and benefits and ophthalmic post-operative complications.
    • Experience with indications and contraindications to perform basic and advanced ophthalmic examinations.
    • Experience performing minor surgical procedures such as laceration closure, incision and drainage, and suture removal as directed by staff ophthalmologists.
    • Experience using a personal computer, to include Internet and automated systems, such as Armed Forces Health Longitudinal Technology Application (AHLTA) and Composite Healthcare System I (CHCS I), for data retrieval, clinical documentation and research.

 

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR:  This position has a selective placement factor needed in order to qualify. The actual Selective Placement Factor is:   current license as a Physician Assistant in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; AND current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.  Failure to possess both WILL result in an ineligible rating.  Possession of the factor must be verifiable via your resume or supplemental information that is requested in the description listed in Question 1.

REQUIREMENTS: 

Credentialing is required in accordance with BUMEDINST 6320.66

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.

Current license as a Physician Assistant in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States is required.

Selectee is required to participate in the Department of Defense direct deposit of pay program.

Selectee must successfully pass a pre-employment physical examination.

Selectee may be required to successfully complete a probationary period.

 

Work is active and requires standing, sitting, walking, bending, climbing, kneeling and squatting on a recurring basis, as well as lifting of objects over 30 pounds such as transferring and lifting patients from wheelchairs.

 

Work environment is that of an inpatient unit or ambulatory clinic.  The position may entail frequent trips to any and all other areas of the hospital.  The incumbent may be exposed to contagious disease, radiation, infection and contact with anxious/emotionally disturbed patients or family members.  Work may require the use of special protective equipment such as gloves, gowns, mask, etc.

 

A security clearance is a requirement of this position. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a position offer or removal.   If you possess a security clearance, please indicate the level and termination date in your resume.

 

Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if the applicant fails to report to the scheduled drug test appointment.
