This position is located in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Health Effects Laboratory Division (HELD), Allergy and Clinical Immunology Branch (ACIB), Morgantown, West Virginia.

The incumbent serves as a Research Biologist designing difficult and complex research programs. Manages and directs a team of research staff in the conduct of experiments to address project aims. Serves as program coordinator, principal investigator, project leader, and scientific researcher for studies, elucidating the mechanisms of transmission of the respiratory viruses in occupational settings. Information will be collected concerning does-response and time-course relationships as well as elucidation of mechanisms for initiation and development of disease. Results will be used by NIOSH, OSHA, EPA and international regulatory agencies to conduct risk assessment to support standards and develop prevention strategies to protect the health of workers both in the US and internationally. The incumbent collects, organizes and statistically analyzes results of program investigations. Results will be communicated to the scientific and occupational health communities by oral and poster presentations at national and international conferences, by invited presentations at academic and governmental institutions, and by publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals or as invited reviews or book chapters. Provides direction, technical guidance, and delegated supervision to the professionals and technical assistants assigned to his/her program and project area.  Performs other duties as assigned.

To qualify, applicants must have successfully completed a full four-year course of study at an accredited college or university leading to a degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.




Possess a combination of education and experience - courses equivalent to a major in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional education.


In addition, applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.


Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience conducting research into the causes, mechanisms, and control of adverse health effects due to workplace exposures.
