The position functions in the inpatient section of pharmacy service.  Primary responsibilities of this position include the processing, preparing, and filling of unit dose and sterile parenteral medications and solutions, maintaining all IV rooms and stocking the automated medication dispensing system.  Technicians at this level are capable of operating with minimal supervision, except when dealing with more complex patients and procedures.  The technician functions under the direct supervision of the Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisors.  Specific duties include but are not limited to:

-Responsible for delivery of pharmacy supply items for use in the inpatient pharmacy satellites and IV rooms or as identified by their direct supervisor. 

-Pulls medication from the pharmacy supply area, complete and file reports, load medications into individual dispensing units in patient areas, and troubleshoot any problems.

-Dispenses and returns narcotic medications for anesthesiology service to be used during procedures at the Medical Center.

-Removes outdated, unusable and/or excess inventory for return to pharmacy materials management for appropriate redistribution, return for credit, or destruction.

Basic Requirements:

(1) Must be a citizen of the United States.

(2)Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).

(3) Must have high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.

(4) Must be certified by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). A copy of your certification must be included in your application package.

 

Minimum Requirements: 

GS-06:

Must have one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05) which demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs): 1. Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment.  2. Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique. 3. Knowledge of basic inventory procedures. 4. Knowledge of pharmacy information systems.   In addition, you must have experience which demonstrates the following technical KSAs required for the GS-6 grade level: 1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action. 2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment. 3. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents. 4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products. 5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts. 6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.

Work Schedule: M-F, 7:30a.m.- 4:00p.m.
