JOB SUMMARY:

Incumbent will work at the National Archives at Denver located at 17101 Huron Street, Broomfield, CO 80023.

As a Student Intern, you will perform work on archival records, which may include reference service, arrangement, processing, description, preservation and holdings maintenance, sorting, retrieval, relocation, and re-filing of records.

Student Intern Program:  This position is being filled under the new Pathways – Internship Program which provide opportunities for high school, vocational and technical, undergraduate, graduate, and professional students to be exposed to the work of the Federal government.

 

Student Definition:  Students must be accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc,) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled) throughout the duration of the appointment, including awardees of the Harry S. Truman Foundation Scholarship Program under Public Law 93-842.

 

Position Duration/Expectation:  Positions will be temporary not-to-exceed 1 year.  May be extended in 1 year increments based on continued need/funds for the position and the student's continued compliance in the Intern Program.

Typical duties may include all or any combination of the following:

Reference: Provides reference service by searching for, re-filing, or inter-filing records in simple or self-indexing filing systems. Correct locations are provided, specific information is requested, locations are concentrated and alternate actions are not routinely required. As instructed, searches for information in designated portions of the records, searching for specific, readily available information in answer to requests of a recurring nature. Obtains specific records for the use of higher grade employees, or for the use of others requesting the service, assists in the surveillance of records while in research use to see that they are being used properly, and returns them to the appropriate storage areas. Follows all NARA guidelines relating to research room rules and the protection/security of records.  Keeps abreast of all new NARA regulations on the security and physical protection of archival materials and their use by researchers.

Holdings Maintenance and Preservation:  Performs holdings maintenance and preservation actions on archival records.

Administrative: Performs duties related to office administration or reception. Answers the section telephone, as required.  As appropriate, documents requests for records or information, posting requests to control logs and/or relaying messages to section and/or unit personnel. Enters data in prescribed format into case management system or other tracking log.  Types a variety of correspondence, forms and other materials from handwritten drafts and/or verbal instructions.

Miscellaneous: Provides technical assistance to lower grade employees. Greets visitors, answers phones and directs calls to the appropriate staff person, as necessary.  Performs other related duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:   You must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled).  

 

For GS-3:   Six months of general experience in a progressively responsible clerical, office or other work, or one year of college education in any field, or a combination of experience and college education to meet the total requirements for this position.
