This position is located in the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Division of Intramural Research (DIR), Laboratory of Clinical Infectious Diseases (LCID).

If selected for this position at the GS-12 level, you will perform the following duties:

  • Independently assess acute and non-acute clinical and research related problems and toxicities.
  • Perform clinical and research-related procedures, including  (but not limited to) patient scheduling; history/physical (including pelvic examination); administering questionnaires; mucosal sampling; collection of saliva and/or vaginal fluid.
  • Lead patient care rounds and conferences.
  • Contribute to the design, methodology, implementation, and regulatory review of specific protocols as assigned.
  • Monitor and document clinical and research-related developments and response to therapy and communicate findings to principle investigators with recommendations for appropriate intervention.
  • Communicate and collaborate with the multidisciplinary research team to ensure that patient management strategies are successful in meeting patient care and research needs.

 

If selected for this position at the GS-11 level, your duties will be essentially the same as those described at the GS-12 level; however, you will function with less autonomy and more oversight.

Education :  Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

Registration:  Applicants must have an active, current registration as a professional nurse in the State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.  An applicant who has graduated from an approved nursing educational program within the past 12 months may be appointed pending State registration as a professional nurse within 6 months of appointment.  No person appointed pending registration may be retained beyond 6 months, or promoted, if registration has not been attained.  The NP will obtain/maintain licensure as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Maryland and obtain NP Attestation (with a Maryland-licensed physician) approved by the Board of Nursing. In addition to the basic qualifications:  Candidates must have an approved Nurse Practitioner Attestation by the Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON) prior to the appointment as a Nurse Practitioner.

 

To qualify at the GS-11 you must have completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a related field or have one year of Nurse Practitioner experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following tasks:  history/physical including pelvic examinations; assessing acute and non-acute clinical problems in pediatric and adult patients; assessing nursing needs to provide safe and efficient nursing care; performing patient teaching.

 

To qualify at the GS-12 level you must have one year of Nurse Practitioner experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following tasks:

Providing specialized nursing care to pediatric and adult patients in the outpatient setting or in a ward of a hospital with illnesses or medical conditions that require adaptation of established nursing procedures; assessing and managing acute and non-acute clinical problems in pediatric and adult patients; serving as role model and teacher for experienced and fully trained nurses in providing care to patients assigned because of their special needs, for example, patients with medical conditions who are not responding to usual treatment; providing skilled and comprehensive nursing care to pediatric and adult patients who have various medical conditions including patients with infections and/or multisystem abnormalities (e.g., intestinal, liver, lung, kidney) and/or patients who are receiving medications infrequently used with human subjects; assessing nursing needs to provide safe and efficient nursing care; performing patient teaching with patients requiring special approaches, for example, patients with infections or medical problems whose changing conditions require new diets and/or adjustments in medications.
