JOB SUMMARY:

US Army Veterinary Services operates as a subsidiary of Public Health Command. Build your future in Army Veterinary Medicine supporting the military family and their pets while receiving marketable training in a portable and progressive career field.

This is a Part-Time position at the Ft. Hood Veterinary Treatment Center. Incumbent provides care of all animals, mostly dogs and cats but can include pocket pets (hamsters, gerbils, etc) and horses that are kept at the stray animal facility. Performs work according to established methods or follows special instructions.  This individual will be responsible for answering phones, making appointments, checking clients in and out, filing and pulling records, maintaining inventory, calling to confirm appointments, completing end-of-day paperwork, and sending monthly reminders. The ideal candidate would be outgoing, hard working, and able to maintain a positive sense of camaraderie with their team in step with the VTF’s philosophy of “Healthy Patients, Happy Clients”. Definitive work schedule to be determined after hire. VTF is operational from 0800-1600 M-F. No weekends, holidays or TDY.

Incumbent actively participates in the management of the organization by performing a wide variety of clerical and administrative duties. Serves as the central point of contact for matters related to day-to-day operations under the general supervision of a veterinarian. Maintains the Veterinary Clinic's automated database. Responsible for the care of animals and the cleanliness of the facility per standard operating procedures, policies, regulations, and directives. Observes animal's behavior, health, and appearance. Reports illness, disease, and injury to supervisor. Inspects animals for fleas, ticks, or other parasites and reports any cases as directed by the veterinarian. Feeds and waters the animals. Cleans and disinfects animal kennels and cages per the Animal Facility Policy. Assists or performs euthanasia as directed by the veterinarian and in accordance with humane AVMA guidelines. Takes temperature, vaccinates, de-worms, microchips, and examines stray animals for adoption or returning to owner as required. Administers treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian, such as oral medications, subcutaneous vaccinations or medications. May perform venipuncture blood draws and run various laboratory tests as prescribed by the veterinarian. Operates a motor vehicle to pickup supplies, deliver packages, or animals as needed. Duties involve moderate to heavy physical effort including lifting various items such as animals, feed, and supplies occasionally weighing up to 70 pounds. Moderate effort required in scrubbing, scraping, sanitizing kennels and operating power-washing equipment. Considerable standing, sitting, and walking for extended periods of time required. Bending, kneeling, stooping, pushing, pulling, climbing, grasping, reaching, and twisting are all required while performing these duties.

Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid experience or volunteer work.
Applicants meeting the highly preferred criteria will be referred first to the Selecting Official. All other applicants will be referred for consideration if the certificate (referral list) is returned with no selection.
