The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate’s education and experience and recommend the grade and step at which the candidate will be placed.  The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

·       Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, body mechanics, the application and function of prosthesis, and of materials and technology available for use in, and fabrication of  such devices

·       Communicates with patients and other disciplines as a subject matter expert to develop the O&P treatment plan.

·       Interviews patients to determine expectations, lifestyle, home/work environment, ability to use the device.

·       Consult with physician/referral source to modify, if necessary, the original prescription and/or treatment plan.

·       Takes necessary measurements, casts, or scans to develop molds used to fabricate prosthetic and orthotic devices.

·       Formulate and document treatment goals and expected prosthetic and/or orthotic outcomes

·       Perform the necessary procedures to deliver the appropriate orthotic and/or prosthetic device.

·       Document all findings and actions and communicate with appropriate health care professionals, using established record-keeping techniques

·       Educate/counsel patient and/or caregiver about the use and maintenance of the prosthesis or orthosis

·       Evaluates patient’s ability to don/doff the device, provides training to the patient and/or caregiver in its use and maintenance

·       Assesses and/or modifies fit and function of the device as fabricated.

·       Skill in the use of tools, materials, and specialized equipment

·       Serving as an integral member of the professional team providing advice to physicians with regard to development of a treatment plan, selection and prescription of devices, and furnishing information concerning such matters as new developments in the fields of orthotics and prosthetics

·       Required to have practitioner certification from a nationally recognized organization

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:   

  • U.S. citizenship.  Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.   
  • Practitioner Certification from the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics, and Pedorthics (ABC), or certification by another nationally recognized accreditation ody in the area of orthotics and/or prosthetics
  • English Language Proficiency


Preferred Experience: An allied health professional specifically trained to provide or manage the provision of custom designed, fabricated, modified and fitted orthoses and prostheses based upon the independent or consultative clinical assessment of the patients unique needs and desires, as well as their expectations and pursuant to a physician's prescription
