The Indian Health Service (IHS), an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, is responsible for providing federal health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives.  The IHS provides a comprehensive health services delivery system for American Indians and Alaska Natives with opportunity for maximum tribal involvement in developing and managing programs to meet their health needs.

  • Provides assessment, diagnosis, psychotherapy utilizing a broad range of assessment and therapeutic resources as indicated by the specific needs of child, juvenile and adult individuals and groups, and their families.
  • Promotes and preserves a psychotherapeutic atmosphere among the professional treatment staff, participates in developing treatment programs for patients, and advises and consults with all levels of professional staff.
  • Provides thorough and concise written documentation of evaluations, treatment and case management services, psychological test summaries, treatment plans, referrals, and correspondence.
  • Responsible for the overall direction and coordination of the services provided in Behavioral Health Department and the direct supervision of department staff members.
  • Provides direct clinical consultation services for various service units in the Aberdeen Area.

    BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

    DEGREE: Major or equivalent in psychology for all specializations except clinical psychology and counseling psychology. These two specializations have additional educational requirements, as stated below:

    Clinical psychology- Satisfactory completion of all the requirements for the doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) directly related to full professional work in clinical psychology is required.

    IN ADDITION TO BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:  Candidates must have completed 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 grade level to qualify for the GS-14 grade level.

    SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:  Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, i.e., managing a multidisciplinary team of professional and support staff to include planning, directs, and coordinates high quality, comprehensive behavioral health services for inpatient and outpatient of all ages with a wide variety of diagnostic conditions.  Provides direct patient care (evaluation, treatment planning, therapeutic intervention) in qualifying professional behavioral health discipline.

    SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: Each PHS Clinical Psychologist must possess and maintain a valid, current, unrestricted license or certificate in a State.

    SUPERVISORY OR MANAGERIAL ABILITIES: Candidates must have demonstrated in their work experience or training that they possess, or have that potential to develop, the qualities of successful supervision.

    ·Ability to assign to and review work of subordinates, train and work effectively with subordinate from a variety of backgrounds and with different levels/areas of training.

    ·Ability to accomplish the quality and quantity of work expected within set limits of cost and time.

    ·Ability to plan own work and carry out assignments effectively.

    ·Ability to communicate with others effectively, both orally and in writing, in working out solutions to problems or questions relating to the work.

    ·Ability to understand and further management goals as these affect day-to-day work operations.

    ·Ability to develop improvements in or design new work methods and procedures.
